He came from the east,
All black hair and curious eyes,
Feet wandering into my realm,
Seeking a love to call his own-

He came to this land,
Where the sun rose from the sea,
Shaking off white sea foam,
That fell to the earth like spring dew…

Tall mountains with broad shoulders,
Rose up to greet him,
The trees bowed their lovely leaves,
And pointed out the narrow path…

It was the moon that drew him,
Soft face beauty framed by darkness,
Eyes glowing softly,
Smiling as he climbed so high,

Struggling to touch her face,
Just once before he died,
Ah! How that sweet face drew him forward,
Though he thought he could take another step,
His foot traveled on its own,

Until he reached the summit of his dreams!
With trembling fingers he reached forth,
And rested his fingers on her lips,
Such joy flowed through his heart,

Love burned in his veins,
He shouted with all his power,
“I love you!
Won’t you come and be my wife?”

Ah such sorrow that crossed her face,
“My true and honest love,”
She whispered into his heart,
“I can never leave my home,
I bound here by the laws of the one
Who made me…

Laws that can not be broken,
Not for man,
Not for gods,
Not even for love…”

“Then I will stay here,” he whispered,
Touching her lips again,
“You can not…”she told him,
“You are dying even now as we speak,
The coldness of my world,
Is freezing your soul,
And I will not be the Death of you…

“But I love you!
There must be a way!”
“Not unless you can stay the day,”
She told him as her light begin to fade away…

Alas, he had come from the East,
Seeking his peace,
And had found only shadows,
Which would haunt him all his days;

He returned to the land from whence he came,
All sun and white sands,
Desert heat which burned his heart,
Into ashes of sweet regret…

Yet at night when the lovely moon rises,
He seeks her face in the land of his birth,
Remembering in dreams a journey,
That took him to the ends of the earth,
Where he found and lost,
His one true love…

Has the class, form and style of a beautiful mythical epic, Retta. I think this must rate as one of my favourites of yours - even for you with your vast catalogue of narrative beauties. The imagery and storyline are perfectly balanced, and the tone so gentle yet strong. A wonderful tale of love lost and found: tragic, yet triumphal. TY for this, LOL Kate xx
