Flame Dance

The Elder says...
Do not stare into the flames,
The demons dance there,
And will blind your eyes,

But the dancing flames,
Holds my eyes,
And I watch the demons,
Stare back at me,
With such despise…

Twirling in the flames,
Beckoning me to join in,
Take their hand,
And dance on the smooth sand…

I sit and watch her,
Lovely lady of flames,
How she enticed the men,
To join in,
But they do not look at her,
Instead they look away,
Measuring the end of the day…

In smooth steps,
And pounding drums,
They put the sun to bed,
And welcome the moon instead,

But I,
Stare into the flames,
Memorizing her moves,
Her leaps and whirls,
How she beseeches the sky,
Calling to her Lord-

Will he come?
The Sun God-
Will he take her in his fiery arms,
And carry her away?
And I watch the day,
Slowly end,
And the evening ceremony,
Begins anew…

And I watch,
So carefully,
With the flames burning,
In my eyes…

It was easy to get lost in the flames with you as your words beckoned with mastery of words and images. Truly an exciting piece.
