Identity Crisis

Sitting by the sea,
On this cold winter morning,
Feeling the icy breeze,
Begin to freeze,
My heart…

I feel the pull of the tide,
Reaching for me,
With long silver fingers,
That tangle in my hair,
Golden light shinning in eyes,
That never close…

How to relate to those
Who want to know me?
When others feel nothing-
See nothing but their own images,
Reflected in opaque hate-

At times,
I forget who I am,
My name slides off me,
And I don’t recognize,
The face in the mirror…

I watch it run and hide,
Wondering where it is going,
Who it wants to be today,
Who it was yesterday,
That stared back at me…

Identity Crisis,
Who am I?
God,
How could you know?
When I don’t…

Oh, Retta! You covered these feeling perfectly! My mother once said I was at war with myself because I couldn't figure out who I was.

Reindeer, this is a very powerful poem, very powerful! A wonderful synthesis of art and thought revealing a tortured psyche! Bravo!

A beautiful poem that speaks loudly because it speaks softly. Saying it poorly, but you know what I mean. Blessings, Pea

Retta, now this is amazing. Seems like we both had a "who am I," on our minds. I wrote mine before I read yours. Anyway I can relate to your excellent expression here. hugs G

Excellant work, awesome expression and chilling and haunting imagery Lady Retta! We all have a identity crisis of sorts at one time or another, alas 'tis maybe sad but true..."only we ever really truly deep down know ourselves!"

Wonderful write Retta! I agree with Amor's comments. Yes, it's only you who will know yourself best. Others will get to know you once you know yourself, but not until then.

Love your write, we've all been there.

You have expressed this so well, Retta. Who can define you when you have yet not? How can one know your heart when they have not lived it. Only genuine emotion can surface lighter than air and straight to the top with expressions such as this. Excellent work. So glad to be back.
