Ghost of a Child

Death haunts me,
Like the ghost of a child,
Wondering who I am,
That I call his name so freely…

“Who are you?”
He whispers to me,
In his raspy voice,
Seeking to scare me back,
To whence I came,

But I answer him just the same-
I am hopes unfilled,
And dreams wickedly killed,
Sorrow has etched his name,
Into the deepest part
Of my heart…

I call to the shadows,
And the come!
Leaving me quite undone,
Walking among them unafraid,
And laugh when you call me brave!

I have lost it all,
Hear no one call,
See no sweet face before me,
Wonder what you see,
If you can understand,
It is you that threaten to shove,
Me from this shallow perch,
On which I stand…

The child in me died,
So long ago I don’t remember why,
Yet her spirit haunts me still,
This ghost of a child,
That was never real…

So come to me Death,
I wait for you,
To suck out my last breath,
I care not for what you do-
It was never you,
I feared…

Deeply moving piece Reindeer. This child is real ... embrace her, then take her by the hand and lead her out of the darkness.

Greetings Retta.
This poem is beautiful. I felt every emotion.
Inside every grown up lives an eight year old, who longs to be hugged.
