May 5, 1862 - the day Mexico defeated the French at Puebla, Mexico

Poem Artwork

Cinco de Mayo…Olé!

Way down in Mexico when the lights are low
and Mariachi bands begin to play
Just west of Veracruz where there’s lots of booze
and pretty señoritas swing and sway.

They dance and celebrate till the day is late
in the city of Puebla de Zaragoza
You can drink tequila in your Margarita
perhaps with Señorita de la Rosa.

In 1862 when the sky was blue
the French came here to steal their land
The Pueblans said “no manches!, Pierre “
And kicked their asses till they all ran.

Now on this day in May in the USA
We celebrate from Maine to San Diego
To the French we say just stay to hell away
Unless you want another bautismo de fuego. *

*baptism by fire

You seem to be very familiar with Puebla de Zaragoza. Have you kicked back a few margaritas there?

It wasn't just the French that they defeated. After we beat up the Mexicans for the Alamo and took a big chunk of their land in the Mexican-American war, they have now conducted a quiet, under the radar, invasion where Mexicans can claim voting plurality in much of the same land that Americans took from them by force so long ago.

Olé! 5 May!

Edward, great story...I love history so you had my attention from the beginning.

Enjoy and love your poems...always...even when you
try to be serious...it feels funny, but the "fifth
of May battle" seems to have a special significance
to the American continent...and good reason to have
lot of fun and taguitos with a Latin flavour.
Have a good weekend, Edward.
