Beautiful Isle of Somewhere
You were 33 the day I was born
Still, it was love at first sight.
You had all the qualities –
Auburn hair, good looks, an
Infectious smile
And you glowed with love.
A man could hardly ask for more.
You didn’t mind when I hung around
Drinking in your words
Exploring your smile
Watching the twinkle in your eyes
And always wondering
How you could turn snow into
Ice cream?
Or dandelion greens into
Succulent spinach?
I had no idea that we were poor
And that you were a genius at
Turning free things from the Earth into
Glorious food.
I never heard you utter
A harsh word
Not at me nor anyone.
You carried me on your back
Even though with only a small body yourself
You did not mind.
We had a secret that you never once revealed—
I would sneak into your bedroom
In the wee hours of the morning
And slide in next to you.
Your soft warm body was
My refuge from all my worldly cares
And there were many
With the war going on
In Europe and in the Pacific.
And then one day I watched as you
Passed out while we were talking.
It was my first taste of harsh things
Yet to come.
Your incredible heart that had beat so
Soundly and resolutely for others stopped—
And my life changed forever.
You were only 39.
And I still had a life to live.
I wasn’t ready to take on the world.
Oh, I snarled and I fought
And I messed things up.
But I never learned to hate
Or steal
Or stab others in their backs.
I found other crutches—
I leaned on things like
Alcohol to help blot out much of a dreary life.
My fight was with life itself.
Too soon I had to live without you in it.
It was a bitter battle.
But here I am.
Weathered and battered
And just smart enough to know
That life belongs to those
Who are grateful to discover there are
Other loving people just like you
Willing to give away half of all their days
So that saps like me have a chance
To find that
Love is what life is all about.
Happy birthday, mom!
Thanks for the gift of life.
There’s a celebration coming.
I don’t know the exact location but
I remember the words at your funeral
So long ago…
Somewhere, somewhere,
Beautiful Isle of Somewhere!
Land of the true , where we live anew,
Beautiful Isle of Somewhere!

My life started like yours, except my brother and I were not allowed to crawl into bed or even going to our parents' bedroom. She died on February 14 at 95, having touched so many people with her kindness and love. I am indeed fortunate, to have had her and her unfailing support through all of my trials.
