Remember the night that you and I first met?

You’d had a big gig in Miami, but had it planned at specific time,

When the big hand was on 12 and the little one on 9,

You’d lay your guitar down, and jump off the stage to flee,

But didn’t expect to rip your jeans, leaving a big hole in the knee

Thousands of fans watched you leave, thinking it was part of the show

But what they didn’t know is that you were a man with a special place to go

You paid little attention to their thunderous applause; your sights were on I-95,

And getting on that black ribbon of road to make a several hour drive.

Baby, whenever I look around,

Cherished memories of you abound.

Without you here, things just haven’t been the same,

‘Cause only the four walls hear when I call your name.

You finally arrived in J’ville, and because this was our first meeting

We warmly gave each other hugs, just a friendly sort of greeting

We had a very late supper, and talked about every kind of thing,

But mostly about adapting my poetry for a song you could sing.

I was drawn to you, but couldn’t tell if you were attracted to me,

So I held back, behaving in a way that was simply sweet and friendly.

I sat in my chair, reading my verses to you while you lay near me on the floor,

And desperately wanted to make a move, but you were afraid I’d kick you out the door.

Baby, whenever I look around,

Cherished memories of you abound.

Without you here, things just haven’t been the same,

‘Cause only the four walls hear when I call your name.

Eventually, I joined you on the floor, sitting up above your head

With a fanciful maneuver of your head up and back, sort of tilted,

And without either of us having a single word to say,

You pulled me to you in a most unconventional way,

So that our very first kiss was kind of upside down,

And the four walls heard our first passionate sound.

We went up the stairs to make sweet love again and again,

And many were the times I cried out your precious name.

Whenever I look around, cherished memories of you abound,

And especially of our first kiss, the one that was upside down.

Baby, without you here, things just haven’t been the same,

‘Cause only the four walls hear me now when I call your name.

Baby, I wish you could know just how very much

I still yearn for upside kisses and your loving touch.

I’ll admit it; I’m not the least ashamed, ‘cause it’s true ,

Things just have never been the same since you.

In my dreams, up those stairs, hand in hand, you and I climb

So we can share our passion, paying no attention to the time.

But now, only the walls hear my calls for you when I go to bed,

And only the pillow under my head knows the tears I’ve shed.

Whenever I look around, cherished memories of you abound,

And especially of our first kiss, the one that was upside down.

Baby, without you here, things just haven't been the same,

'Cause only the four walls hear me now when I call your name.
