They want me to put down the shotgun
they want me to spare them their life
and he's reminding me how we were buddies
while he's lying there next to my wife
And she lays with her head 'neath the covers
too ashamed to look at me I'm sure
saying how sorry she's feeling
and how he doesn't mean nothing to her
And he's assured me that this the first time
while she swears on her life it's the last
forgetting how often we've been here
yes it's a scene that's straight out of the past
Though it's the first time I've threatened to kill her
and meant it with all of my heart
so now they wait for that tug on the trigger
that will tear both their bodies apart
And he begs me to put down the shotgun
in case it goes off by mistake
but I point both those barrels straight at him
and watch the terrified look on his face
His feet slowly slide from the covers
and he places them soft on the floor
as she raises her head to look at me
I've never seen her this frightened before
And for some reason that tugs at my heartstrings
although I know that I shouldn't care less
still slowly I'm turning the weapon
until the barrels sit square on my chest
With my hands barely reaching the trigger
fingers splayed out like a fan
convinced now that life's not worth living
and determined to die where I stand
They know they're no longer in danger
and there's an audible sigh of relief
as she begs me to put down the shotgun
and slowly he gets to his feet
she pleaded with me to see reason
as like a leopard towards me he sprang
doing his damdest to stop me
but the last thing I hear is the bang.
