You thought I was your knight in armour,
Shinning, bright and bold,
Just like all those Dragon Slayers,
You read about of old.
Every word I spoke was gospel,
Every statement fact,
But the few short years we’ve been together,
Sure put an end to that.
These days I’ve gone from Stephen Hawkins
To Moron of the Week,
You disagree with what I’m saying,
Before I start to speak.
And I never felt the tarnish forming,
Upon my armour plate,
Never saw the cracks appearing,
Until it was too late.
My pedestal just started crumbling,
There beneath my feet,
What a shame, your imagined hero,
And reality should meet.
It turns out; I’m just a normal fellow,
With frailties and faults,
Not the superhuman legend,
That at first you may have thought.
And it must have been a blow to learn,
I don’t have the power of flight,
And I could be brought down to my knees,
Without the use of Kryptonite.
But I never do remember saying,
I was better than I am,
So I’m sorry if I gave the impression,
That I was more than just a man.
I’ve always tried to be your equal,
With neither one of us in charge,
Though in truth you did make decisions,
More than I did, by and large.
And I seldom argued with you,
But let you mostly have your way,
So perhaps you saw a weakness,
In that fact, in some strange way.
Perhaps you thought if I could give in,
All those times, I can’t be strong,
But just because I let you have your way,
Doesn’t mean that I was wrong.
I just didn’t want to hurt you,
Or see you get upset,
Because, too often people argue,
And say things that they regret.
For it’s said the spoken word is like the arrow,
And once it’s spent, can’t be retrieved,
So I’d rather bite my tongue off,
Than say something to make you leave.
And if that means I’m not the hero,
You dreamt of as a child,
And your disappointment in me,
Cannot be reconciled.
Then I guess the evil queen has won,
And your hero has been slain,
Our castle lies in ruins,
To never rise again.
Infatuation's major building blocks are lustful misconception and naïve expectations. Your poem creates a story that plays out in so many lives where ignorance imagines fairytales that just aren't true.
