Nobody wants to speak of death,

And I cannot fathom why,

Oh don’t worry, I am not depressed,

Or contemplating suicide.

I’ve lived a long and fruitful life,

Which at times I believe’s been blessed,

But whatever one does with their life,

It has to culminate in death.

And it’s nothing to be scared of,

Ironically, it’s part of life,

The end of mortal labours,

The end of pain and strife.

And whether one believes in a religion,

With Heaven and Paradise,

Or believe we sleep eternally,

The last time we close our eyes.

Makes very little difference,

To the global scheme of things,

No-one can say for certain,

What the end of this life brings.

Perhaps the human soul exists,

And moves on to somewhere else,

Perhaps it doesn’t, who can say?

Until we’ve been there ourselves.

I don’t think it’s death that we’re afraid of,

Because at the point of death comes peace,

I think it’s how we die that scares us,

Not actually being deceased.

And I suppose that’s understandable,

Because who would really want to know?

That a painful death awaits them,

When it’s their time to go.

So we just don’t talk about it,

Instead we treat it as taboo,

As though doing that makes us immortal,

Although we know that that’s untrue .

It’s clear, we don’t want to face our own mortality,

Because nobody wants to die,

So we pretend it will not happen,

Which basically means,

“We Lie”.

We sure do. But I have always been different, and hope that my death comes soon before these aggravating spasms, itches I can't scratch and other maladies that beset me every day would be better if they stop along with me. Freeing my long-suffering partner from her loving but enslaved, ties with me that get harder every day to accomplish.

But I do hope they wait until I finish these last two books completely and get them published. For my only way to immortality is my written work. My only legacy that will will be on me.
