A GEORGIA STORM OVER A TIN ROOF
The wind whistling through the pines must be angry and in pain
Does it moan because of being chased by the rain?
The two will soon be locked in battle
And vent their anger over a Georgia tin roof.
The wind is trying to tear the roof off
The rain is driving bullet wherever it can
Those inside say a prayer to the upstairs man
And try to keep it dry by putting out pan after pan.
Those shanties carried love that bonded a family
Where molasses and flap jacks were a dandy
Not as a colonial with resident with high cheeks and chins aloof
Who could not understand warmth during a storm under a tin roof.
Those days have come and gone for the tin roof has almost disappeared
I can still remember the Georgia Storm over a tin roof where I was reared
Where the family huddled by a fireplace to keep us warm
To weather out the chill and fear of that terrible storm.
The roof seemed like it was going to blow away
Mom and dad says to children let us pray
The rain beat a steady cadence as the wind made the house sway
There would be little sleep today or going out to play.
What water that roof could not hold formed rivers outside
Puddles in which later you would slip and slide
I still have pictures in my mind as proof
Of character that was built during a storm over a Georgia tin roof.
