Path of the Willow tree

by Elisabeth Barstowe — Read all 441 poems by Elisabeth Barstowe

This is my internal (intuition) battling my external (logic) written down in a poem. The scenery I put in words needed to be anything but mundane, because otherwise it would have made a flat poem. This is actually one of very few poems that I have been working on for a bit, since yesterday that is.

Daughter of the wind wild and free
please open your inner eye to see
A message set for you in urgency
What is shown to you, so mote it be
I opened my eye to heed the plea
Willow trees in a row I could see

The road before you is daunting
many sorrows will be haunting
Fork in the road which  direction?
Choose safety or no  protection

How can you grow without thorns?
How can you mend without storms?
Open your heart for what is to come
Love will be yours and then some

Don't be afraid of the road that wait
make your way onto it with haste
It is prophesied since days yore
the love that you had once before
Now at last it will be yours again
that which was promised you then

When you gave your life to the world
Your words to be spread and heard
Life once lived in agony and in pain
A life that hasn't been lived in vain

It was promised then, yours now
for you to reap what was sowed
Pain you use to spread the light
the only way through was to fight

This love rapidly approaching  me
it scares me to death can't you see
I am afraid of rejection and shame
and more of that dull, aching pain
Please don't force me in its way
where I am is where I want to stay

Remain and greatness will be lost
you cannot yourself foresee the cost
Trust in us our child of dark and light
don't lose that hope out of your sight

This road may be rough many times
but the love and light that you will find
will surpass anything seen in this life
it will lead you out of your internal strife

Hear me now ancestors as I say this;
my life now is already soaked in bliss
This path of Willow tree I must travel
in order for my past hurt to unravel
Why do you say I wield my own destiny
Then say that that is where I need to be?

Please tell, I do not understand
This path you say is in my hand
Then unravel and say it isn’t so
because that is where I must go

Don’t bestow on me this life in bliss
Then take it away because of this
destiny you say is mine to shape
Know this is why I am losing faith

Daughter of the ancient tribe
our angel of the golden vibes
Your threads are yours to wield
we can only point to golden fields
To the way of a life lived in service
because this is where you need  to be

You made a promise long ago
now you turn and say it isn’t so
We are nothing to you but lies
not beings of the universal skies

Your oath held no value at all
if you refuse to heed the call
Your promise to us  long ago
now you turn and say it isn’t so

You’ve woven your life by the Willow
to shape and bend what is below
To make a stand for humankind
offer them eternal peace to find
The light is always yours to wield
gained  from ancient  battlefields

Share the lessons you have learned
true happiness is what you’ve earned
To build peace on the world you live in
now is where you need to begin

So I will walk the path of the Willow tree
not truly knowing if it’s right for me
I have faith my heart will lead me right
and I can let it cease its endless fight

This poem really captures the back and forth, hope and doubt of living life and trying to make wise decisions. I've felt it so many times myself! Thanks for sharing this poem of yours.

I can see you have devoted some time to this poem of struggle and attempt to reach a better life by changing. One of the hardest things for us to do as we get older and change becomes harder and harder to accomplish.

The twisted tree trunks look almost human. A very good selection to illustrate your poem.
