Maybe in another time
Another era
Another world
When my eyes are focused
And my hands can reach
When my heart is animated
And my greed is gone
When my soul is pure
And my life has not already been lived
I might merit
This grace bestowed
Maybe in a different place
A different history
A different set of rules
When we are unbound like birds in the air
And can charm the world with our gall
When we plough the earth to sow our dreams
And can wait together for the seeds to grow
When we walk in the park hand in hand
And can laugh our laugh for all to hear
I might merit

Maybe with a new name
A new status-quo
A new chance
When we wont explain why we cry
And can dab our eyes when we are done
When we wont transmit messages in codes
And can exchange bouquets of roses with notes attached
When we wont seek a lane with no traffic to walk
And can kiss freely in a crowd
I might merit

But now all I can do is ask
In a voice sated with remorse again and again

Sam I have a poem by the same name, posted in my den, and it asks the same question, only in different words. This poem too, reflects bittersweet memories for me, especially the last stanza. I have a new name, a new status quo and a new chance. But, when I was younger, that new name, new status quo, and new chance would be denied to me for many, many years. This is very beautifully done. In a world where all of these things you mention are blocked by fears and inhibitions, the very idea of this changing is astounding. I think the ending sets it off, because you snap out of the daydream and go back to the original question of why.
You do humble very well, Sam! This is a beautiful poem and I can see "why" Thanks for sharing
