Forever red (and white and black)

This was inspired by looking over a series of paintings depicting farm and rural life with International Harvester tractors prominently displayed. I once saw a gallery of such paintings featuring John Deere equipment and I guess IH deserved a little equal time. The title of this poem was also the title of one of those paintings, which depict a garage scene, with dad and grandpa working on the tractor, while a little boy works on his toy Harvester.

Not all the farmer's trusted servants

are green, you know.

Some pick cotton, some pick corn,

while scattering phesants on an autumn morn.

and of course, there's an old, reliable red

puttering in the fields and planting corn.

the popping and growling diesels

with big wheels which contain

stretched out jack o'lanterns.

The smaller forms of Mr. McCormick's pride and joy

helped form a fam kid's toy paradise.

And when the big ones are done,

the little ones come along to clean up

after a long day on the backyard forty.

She's always been a noble help,

whether a rickety small gray tractor

or a lumberng red behemoth

whose wheels take up the road.

Forever red? Primarily,

but those old trucks can be gray,

or black or even a very dark green

roaring to take livestock to market.

Or grain to the elevator.

And back at the house,

mom keeps the food cold and colder with that familiar sign.

Not all the farmer's trusted servants

wear the color green.

some wear orange, some wear yellow,

with the mighty eagle

perched upon the globe.

And thre are those of many colors,

but mostly black and white and red,

forever red..

You have painted the rustic scene you intended with your words, Steve. Thanks for sharing. Love and peace to you,
