There was a day, you know,

when everyone congreagted

at the old lumber yard,

along the state highway.

Farmers caem here to

buy wood paneling for the sheds

and for the house when honey-do

season rolled around in the winter.

There were townsfolk too,

but the town wasn't much of one,

Whatever you needed around

the  house was all here,

paint, plywood, stain and nails

to put it all together.

The smell of sawdust

and a cup of coffee

and farmers swapping stories

over nutty bars and candy bars.

Now, the building goes to seed,

trees overtake the sales floor,

and weeds overgrow the sheds

where lumber was once neatly stacked.

The ranch house front is falling down,

the windows are almost gone.

Leaving only the ghosts and

memories around.

Once upon a time,

there was life here.
