I was travelling home on New Year's Day 2008 when I had to pass through Danville, IL. It was a miserable day, very cold and windy and the scene in the main business district seemed to match it. That seems to be the case for all too many mid-sized midwestern industrial towns like Danville. "Uncle Joe" is Joseph Cannon, Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, while the long lost major factory was a General Motors facility on the west edge of town.
