Incurable Optimist

Lament of a miserable pessimist who wants his optimistic friend to be like him.

Why join a race you know you can't win?
Too slow to start as a flier.
Why come in here to this dwelling of sin?
When your heart has no passion or fire.

You see only rainbows and pie in the sky,
your dumb head is filled with false hope.
You send off your letters, expect a reply.
Enclosing a stamped envelope.

Do you really work hard at being so dumb?
Or does it just come naturally?
You join in the queues with joy and aplomb,
hoping to get something for free.

Why look so happy to join in the dance?
As though you just haven't a care.
You gamble as though you stand a good chance,
in truth, you just haven't a prayer.

You haven't a clue what life's all about,
you laugh in your stupid ass way.
I give you a lecture and try to point out,
that for what you get free, twice you'll pay.

Don't give me that bull that your boat’s coming in,
how one day, your luck's gonna change.
People like us, you should know never win,
that's life kid, there’s no rearrange.

You keep lucky charms and an old rabbit’s foot,
it’s foolish and that's understood.
You're stupid to think that a foot will bring luck,
when it did the rabbit no good.

Sometimes I feel I could slap your sweet face,
you stupidly, act damned carefree.
You're such an optimistic disgrace,
be an unhappy killjoy like me.

I like the last line… In fact, I like all the lines showing us up for who we are… Ignoramuses without a clue. ;-)

Love the irony. Life's a game and we should play our hand, with fun and fun and fun.

Ken,
That's me, the cock-eyed optimist, sending off my stories and novel excerpts, sure that this one will strike gold. I don't learn from rejection except to keep on trying. Perfect poem for members here at Authors Den. We've been through the wringer!
