A Fallen Knight

A dying sun
glowing in a somber sky
bears witness to my agony

Fragmented thoughts
drift across my mind
tormenting me greatly

This gaping wound
deep within my chest
assures me of an unescapable fate

I am weak and exhausted

from battle
from loss of blood
from this exodus of my life force

Death watches
and confidently awaits
my reluctant surrender

I abhor this "ange de la mort"
only because it comes too soon
much too soon

This ordeal that I face

this journey of unknowing
this untimely departure
this slayer of earthly dreams

has filled my mouth with a taste
of gall-like bitterness

Foiled, are my plans!
Lost, is my beloved!
Unborn, are my children!

I lay here painfully aware
of my inability to reconcile
mistakes of yore

Aware of quests, aborted!
Unsaid goodbyes!
Passions, unsated!

Yet now, my time has come

I am fallen and weary
I will struggle no more
I will lament no more

My only prayer request
is ...that when buried
I be laid
my head toward the West!

You obviously know a lot about Celtic mythology Gwen.

I liked the story of this and the "other worldly" feel, and as a Knight in Tarnished Armour myself I felt for the guy.

Gwen this is a terrific poem, before I read your comment about facing west. I thought the knight was facing west because of the setting of the sun. peace

Note: In ancient times, Kings, noblemen, etc. were often buried with their heads toward the west with the thought in mind that when they "arose/stood up/began" a new life, that they would be FACING EAST, viewing the dawning of a new day/life.

Note: I wrote the poem a few weeks ago, but after finding Richard's poem last week, I rewote the first three lines of my poem to agree with the picture.

A knight's prayer at the end of his journey. Just to have his head headed West when placed to rest. How simple the request ... but what an untold story it tells. Very good Gwen. Bill Murray
