The price one has to pay to be
proper and conform to what
others expect of him/her is
too great to pay for anyone
who wants to be himself/herself.
It was more than forty years ago when I first
read Beyond Freedom and Digniy by renown
behaviorist B. F. Skinner, a book that had a
transformative impact on me. It contributed
significantly to my growing-up after I was
grown.
As I began writing this brief on "Beyond
Propriety" I recalled Skinner's book, howerver,
here I will not discuss Skinner's book but,
in a nutshell, I will focus on propriety, what
it consists of and how to move beyond the
limitations it imposes on living a productive
and meaningful life. In this pursuit I will
present a number of terms that illustrate
the meaning of propriety and the process of
moving beyond the limitations of propriety.
The reader would be well-advised to look up
the meaning of any word listed below that
he does not understand in a dictionary.
Say NO to propriety: being proper, decorum,
conformity, adjustment, mediocrity, and
craving for the approval of other people.
Say YES to "beyond propriety": uniqueness,
creativity, courage to be yourself, non-
conformnity, spontaneity, revelation,
resilience, transformation, love, spirit
and God-consciousness.
"Beyond propriety" is manifested and
demonstrated in unfettered imagination,
embracing the Cosmos as sacred,
continuous growth, listening to your
own music, practicing community and
celebrating life in the eternal now.
I remember reading Beyond Freedom and Dignity when it first came out, as well. It was BF Skinner's finest work and had a profound effect on many, including you and me.
