Many times in years before
It seems far less or maybe more
In darkness I shall not pursue
The visions of a tender hue

Perhaps which is will come to pass
My prison lies within life's glass
But still I may profess to be
The stigma of insanity

Smothered phantoms in this shell
Refuse to live but still they dwell
Faces which I've never seen
Wander out and in between

Emphatically with depth of sound
In silent distance they'll abound
To take a sliver of the whole
That haunts this weary mortal soul

Maybe once in peace of thought
When past has taken all it ought
Living will be as it's sought
Paid with every tear I wrought

Paul,
This poem makes me think of those unforgetable memories that haunt us. The ones we think upon, wondering "what if" or wishing we could go back to make a different choice. Many of my childhood memories haunt me - unhappy memories that I hope to find peace with one day. This poem seems to have that same mixture of emotions - haunting and craving peace. Great rhythm, as always! Love and Hugs,
Sheila

Wow, this is spectacular! I loved every word of it...and yes, you do the rythym and rhyme perfectly. I'm like you, no formal training, I just write what comes out, but I love the rhyme with proper rythym and boy do you have it!
Thanks,
Melissa

The flow and rhyme in this piece work together great. Let me say first I enjoyed reading this. I know it was not intended as amusing but it was. I found myself chuckling a few times (the second and third stanza), not becasue it was funny, but because I understand where you were writing this. I believe it is though persistent and sometimes haunting thoughts that allow our pens flight.

Well, the self-proclaimed untrained has penned a marvelous piece in rhythm and rhyme...and you didn't miss a beat, Paul. I think I know this place you write about ...mind bombarded by the "haunts" exhausting your mind with their sounds and visions. The title "Cacophoney" is perfect and just happens, as a lover of words, to be one of my favorites ...and I think the tears are part of the journey. Much enjoyed, Paul.

Amen!
The shrill of sounds that haunt this life, it is there, within peace of it all, this too shall all make sense!

Loved this write!
