When I got home the house was empty.
The prodigal son was also gone.
I guess he was out playin' with his friends too.
That's right folks, I was all alone for a change
just like I've always been and probably always will be.
I decided that I should use my time wisely.
I packed some suitcases and loaded my car.
I didn't waste any time writin' no note.
I didn't have anything I wanted to say anyway.
I left my phone but took some of my favorite CD's.
I only wanted to hear the voices of friends.
I stopped at the bank and then the gas station,
then found that highway headin' outta town.
You know, I felt like I was Lester Burnham
when he made his great escape from life.
They never understood what he was doing.
How could they understand when they're not him?
But I understand, I'm just like Lester,
and now it's finally my turn to escape.
So I'm driving west, following the sun,
getting away from a life that isn't mine.
You may say that I am running away.
But I'm not runnin' - I'm drivin' - drivin' really fast.
Drivin' in a brand new car
that I payed for with my very own borrowed money.
I'm kinda wonderin' now who's gonna pay for it all.
But I'm not worried. I don't worry 'bout nothin' no more.
You just might call that irresponsible.
But listen mister, I've been responsible for all of my life
and I found out that it's not all it's cracked up to be.
a family that don't care nothin' for me,
They never even suspected that I had any.
Well, maybe they're right, maybe.
But if it's true , then it was them that made me this way
and I'm feeling like a winner today
because I'm driving west

I think I'll drive on out to Colorado.
I've always loved the mountains in the spring.
I'll take a little hike on up to Lake Louise.
I went there once, in better times
and I always wanted to go back there again.
It'll sure be nice to see all of the beautiful flowers.
But I'll be alone this time, not like before.
When I'm done I'll drive on down to Vegas.
Do a little gamblin' - take a chance on love
or whatever it is they call it there.
Or perhaps I should drive over and see the canyon,
just like in the movie. Just like in "Grand Canyon".
And maybe I'll drive my car right over the edge
There's only one thing though,
one thing that's always bothered me about that.
I wonder how they get the cars out of the canyon.
(I wouldn't want to be a litterbug.)
I mean, it's such a deep deep hole and all.

I suppose I could go out to California.
I've been out there a couple of times before.
I've seen LA and Hollywood and the San Fran airport,
but there's nothing really there that calls my name.
I don't think there's anyone I know in California.
No, I don't think there's anybody really there.
I guess that I could drive on down to Phoenix.
I've got a friend there that I haven't seen for a while.
But I don't think he'd understand what I am feeling
and I'd probably just misunderstand his feelings too.
I suppose I could keep driving even farther.
I've got another friend down Tuscon way.
I've always wanted to play poker with her
and just maybe she'd give me a place to stay.
Though she probably wouldn't understand me either.
But then again, she might. She just might.
You know what? Vegas is startin' to sound pretty good.
Yeah, it's soundin' mighty good to me 'bout now.
I guess I always have been a sucker for love.
Love on my terms that is - love on my own terms.
Ah, but what about driving out to see the canyon?
They say that it is beautiful down there.
And I sure been wantin' to go and see the bottom.
Oh well, I'm on the road and I'm driving west.
I guess I really don't have a clue 'bout where I'm goin'
but I suppose that I'll find out when I get there.

Oh, to Hell with it!
farther than I've ever gone before.
before my wife gets home?
She'll really be pissed if I'm not there
when she walks through the door.

"You know what I think? I think that we're all in our private traps,
clamped in them, and none of us can ever get out.
We scratch and claw, but only at the air, only at each other,
and for all of it we never budge an inch."

"Both my wife and daughter think I'm this gigantic loser.
And they're right. I have lost something. I'm not exactly sure
what it is, but I know I didn't always feel this... sedated."
Lester Burnham

"I'll find a woman who knows just how to please a man
and I'll see if I can remember how it feels.
Just one more time, to feel like I'm a man again,
then I'll go to my room and drink myself to death."

Tears fall...
For the world we live in;
A place where people often do not acknowledge one another.
For those locked out, or locked in ...
Who can not, or will not, connect to their world.
For those whose lives revolve around reminiscing, revelry and regret.
For those who find no ecstasy in today,
And look furtively to tomorrow.
For those who live caught, between the sadness of fading memories,
And the fear of pain risked making new ones.
For those full of the drudgery of life,
And empty of its joy.
For those who think the unlined face of youth is beauty,
And fail to see the masterpiece of life upon an aging countenance.
For those who wrap themselves securely in a blanket of disappointment,
Suffocating the hope and desire within.
For those who have refused to dream for so long,
That the dreams they possess are dusty and withered with time,
Tucked safely into the niche they placed them in.
