I did not want summer to end, the ride back in the old station wagon was lonely I pressed my face against the back window. Staring at the cars behind me not wanting to wave, just looking through them, far beyond their still faces lost in my summer dream.
If I were a lone I know I would be crying, my mother knew what was wrong she just smiled and watched the traffic go by. My father tired to get me to play slug bug and the license plate game but I was lost in a different thought thinking about how far it was from where I was, and far it is to where I am going.
It was late when the old station pulled into our drive my mother helped me into the house; and ran her hands across my moist eyes. I kissed her on the cheek and went up stairs sat on porch roof leaving my window open so I could hear our favorite song the record she gave me. “It’s not time to make a change, just relax take it slowly, you’re still young that’s not your fault if you want to you can marry look at me I am old but I’m happy”.
I sat there and cried, listening to Cat Stevens in the moist moonlight I could still smell her hair; I could still feel her hand in mine. I could still see us running down the hill playing on the railroad tracks listening for the dinner bell, the load speaker to end our day, a night of dreaming in our camp beds.
I did not want summer to end, that was forty years ago and I still remember the first time I feel in love but most of all I remember how it made me feel knowing I’ll never see her again when summer came to an end. To this day, I have trouble listening to that tune not because it breaks my heart but because it reminds of what love truly is. It is about a never-ending thought that comes in the middle of the night that drifts you back upon those lost highways of youthful times.
It is the moist silent face pressed against the car window; it is looking beyond the faces in the cars that pass by. It is crying uncontrollable with Cat Stevens in the background. Love is all those things but it is the greatest kind of love when you never want summer to end.
Thank you for the memory your words brought back to me.
Blessings and love,
Susan
