Again I find myself
Staring
Out the window
Into the wilderness before me
As I sit
At the table in my nook
Silence surrounds me
Deafening to my ears
For I no longer hear
The happy laughter
Of my grandsons
Who spend a week with me
While on school recess.
The calls of grandpa I miss
To mediate
And or play with them
Games they enjoy, such as
Checkers, Chess, Cards, Dominos
And poker
They love, using my clay ships
Now I sit fighting back tears
Knowing it will be another year
Before I am able
To share their laughter
I knew good times were over
As My son packed his van
For their return trip
Back home.
Photos were taken
Posing by the front of my house
By the plants and palm trees
By the porch
With my two rocking chairs
We hugged, kissed
Laugh a few last laughs
As I fougth a tear
From drowning my eyes
Kids still laughing
As the van door slammed shut
Silence shrouded my
Unhappiness immediately
The van backed out
from my drive way
A tear
I could no longer hold
Cascaded sliently down
My masquerading smile
As to them I waved good-by.
2006! WHAT A DIFFERENCE THE 'YEARS' HAVE MADE...HUH, MY FRIEND? NOW THEY ARE GROWN AND THE JOY AND LOVE FOR YOUR TIME SPENT WITH THEM IN THEIR YOUTH IS TREASURED AND CELEBRATED. BITTERSWEET TEARS ARE LIKE GLUE... THEY HOLD ON TO SUCH BEAUTIFUL MEMORIES...FOREVER. HOPE ALL IS WELL AND THANKS FOR THIS TOUCHING SHARE. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS
Oh, William...this is so beautiful. Many times I've repeated this same sadness. Now I only want to recall the memories of their coming, rather than leaving. But the haunting silence of children gone from your home certainly lingers...guess that's why I leave my TV running all day, not watching, just overcoming the silence. Your words in this poem are so "complete"!
That had to be so hard! I know my grandparents were the only ones in my life back then that I felt really cared about me. Believe me...you will be missed too!
Oh sad! My own tears fell as memories return of my little grandson and how much he has grown each time I see his happy little smile. We love those kids William and our hearts stay full until the next time.

Such a vivid portrayal that captures the sadness of the moment so fluently. I found this so very touching to read. Well done William.

Thank you for sharing this. It is steeped in love
and affection for those you love so much. I live
300 miles from my sweet mom, dad, and brother whom I adore.
It hurts when one of us pulls out of that drive and
says goodbye!
Be well,
Penny

It does hurt. I still see my son driving off with his mum six years back. That is agony...
oh William how deeply I feel this one! You wrote such a beautiful poem for the occasion, even though it is sad, yet you have the wonderful memories and the love shared. Blessings to you!
