A tear Of Confusion

Sentenced to a life of reviewing
His wrongs
Within a six by nine cell
Day in, day out
No recreation, no TV
Shower once a week.
Sitting in his cell
Staring at the floor
For the rest of his days
In death row.
Time has caught up to him
It's time to pay the fiddler,
Upon his unmarked grave
No lone piper will walk
A salute with amazing grace.

Time dwendled away
Faster than a speeding bullet
Thirteen years of appeals
And temporary reprieves
Came to an end
In more than one way
At sunrise tomorrow
He'll see not, it's beauty
Glowing nor it's glory
Silently between a Guard
And a sad looking Padre
He'll walk at dawn
His final mile
as they say.

His next stop will be
The gates of heaven
Or those of hell,
braking the silence
In the air
That surrounds him
Is the sound
Of ringing church bells
From a distance afar.

Is that a tear of regret
I see slowly traveling
Down the side, of his face?
Or are the bells
Bringing him memories
Of better days
Of once upon a time
Some where down
His life line.

DEAR GOD...I HOPE HE MADE IT TO REST IN THE ARMS OF HIS MAKER! THAT'S WHAT'S REALLY IMPORTANT THAT HE GOT IT RIGHT WITH JESUS ON THIS SIDE, IN THE TIME HE WAS ALLOTTED. WHAT APPEARED TO BE A TEAR OF CONFUSION...HOPEFULLY WAS A TEAR OF PEACE, AT LAST. LOVE, BLESSINGS AND FAITH...HIS+INSPIRATIONS

A gut-wrenching piece, where you've delicately shown the other side of the coin. 13 years...so much time to activate regrets. Not enough time to save the body, but just could save the soul. A piercing poem.

Wow, William!

Coming from a[retired]Police Officer, makes this stellar write even more compelling!

My younger brother is a Corrections Officer, after being a Navy CPO...
The cells are open [no doors] decorated, televisions and microwaves, etc.

They want for nothing....and seeing as they CHOSE to put themselves outside the law, it's hard to swallow, that we are enabling bad behavior...not even removing amenities!

I pray the tear was regret and genuine remorse..

Love&Blessings, Rhonda

I often wonder what the last thoughts are. Most, I think...seem to be cold and rightious but when meeting their maker...are they brave?

Makes me think!

This is a very sad portrait. You do an excellent job of putting us into the condemned person's mind.

A very accomplished poem, William. You've allowed your reader to actually experience this powerful gut-wrenching story! We've gone into the mind of a criminal here as though it were our own. Very powerful, an exceptional poem. This is your best work and I applaud you, my friend.
Love,
CJ
