Godiva Chocolate

We were there when God created Eve from Adam’s rib.
We discovered the power of fire, and made the days warm.
We were there when Jesus turned water into wine,

We come from the kente cloth of Ghana.
We come from the Maasai warriors of Kenya.
We come from the Mayan Indians of South America.

We come from the gold, filled rivers
That flow through all of Africa,

We made the ivory famous on the Ivory Coast
We are the prince, and princess from Persia.

We are descendants of the pyramid-makers in Egypt.
We are descendants of the peanut butter-maker, George Washington Carver.
We are descendants of the blood bank-maker, Dr. Charles Drew.
We are descendants of the female millionaire-maker, Madame C J Walker.

We share a heritage with the hotel-filled cities of Nairobi, Accra, Cape Town,
Lagos and Soweto,
Victoria, Dunn’s River, and Niagara Falls.
Indian Ocean, Atlantic ocean, Baltic Sea.
Virginia Beach, Mount Kilimanjaro, and the Caribbean Sea,
Jamestown, Idlewild, and ChocolateCity.

We are W. E. B. Dubois, Martin Luther, and Mahatma Gandhi.
We are reconstruction, segregation, Jim-Crow, pan-africanism, and apartheid,

We are from the French speaking countries of Sierra Leone, Martinique, and Haiti.
We are from the Spanish speaking countries of Brazil, Belize, and Dominican Republic.
We are from the Dutch-influenced countries of St. Maarten, Aruba, and Antilles.

We are Bishop Desmond Tuto, Steve Biko, and Nelson Mandela.
We are Lena Horn, Dorothy Dandridge, Bill Cosby, and Nat “King” Cole,
We are Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Louis Armstrong,
We are Katherine Dunham, the Nicholas brothers, Alvin Ailey and Gregory Hines.

We are Patricia Harris, Andrew Young, and Ralph Bunche.
We are Stormy Weather, Roots, Dream Girls, and The Color Purple.
We are Barry Gordy, Quincy Jones, and Smokey Robinson.
We are Sammy Davis, Redd Foxx, Richard Pryor, and Ms. Diahnn Carol.

We are Mahila Jackson, Ella Fitzgerald, Aretha Franklin, and Tina Turner.
We are Billie Holiday, Miles Davis, Minnie Riper ton, and Marvin Gaye.

We are Joseph Jenkins Roberts, the first president of Liberia, a free African nation
We are Carl Stokes, the first mayor,
We are L. Douglass Wilder, the first elected governor,

We are Barack Obama, the first to bridge the presidential.
We are the first in our family to graduate high school.
We are the first in our family to graduate from college.
We are reconstruction. We are renaissance. We are the new millennium.
