First print Love poem II, 2
Johnson poem 644 | Franklin poem 713
You left me, sweet, two legacies, —
A legacy of love
A Heavenly Father would content,
Had He the offer of;
You left me boundaries of pain
Capacious as the sea,
Between eternity and time,
Your consciousness and me.
*****
Legaty twe, słodkie, mam dwa;
Dar miłości jednym —
Ojciec jakiś w Niebie by rad,
Jak by Mu przeznaczyć;
A staranie, o granicach
Jak morze szerokich,
Stronami są wieczność i czas,
Ja, i twa świadomość.
TRANSLATOR'S NOTE
The Bequest clearly indicates the Antiquity. The indefinite article directs to a pre-Christian time, when the notion of one heavenly father figure did not have prevalence:
“A Heavenly Father would content,
Had He the offer of…”
We can comprehend the word “legacy” as lore remaining from the past, says MERRIAM-WEBSTER. Verse writing had its early shape also in ancient pieces about love.
“Verse-writers studied it carefully and used it cleverly, but never could make up for the want of free movement of hand by any laborious minuteness of tessellation”, wrote John William Mackail about the poetic pattern by MELEAGER OF GADARA. The resource of 1890 adds, “After Justinian, the art practically died out; (…) henceforth, for the five centuries that elapsed till the birth of Provençal and Italian poetry, love lay voiceless, as though entranced and entombed”.
The “tessellation” is a metaphor for ancient Greek poetic patterns. Project Gutenberg has more:
Vowel reduction is natural in English. There is an interesting thing about the meter of this poem, if to consider vowel reduction and thus vowel length in prosodic stress. Taken the ancient allowance to “sum up” vowel lengths in delineating the rhythm, we can present the stanzas of the Bequest as 8 by 5 vowel lengths.
To see this, let us recognize the central quality in which the speech sound [e] can result; the position is mid, between front and back, as well as low and high vowels. Let us give this mid the symbol з. Some phonetic scripts might ascribe it the SHWA.
Emily Dickinson’s handwriting had the special character ε we might compare GRAPHEMICALLY with the Greek EPSILON. We do not have to seek insight into the poet’s mind, to analyze written language. We can remain by our symbol з, deriving it from PHOENICIAN, a most widely used writing system in the ancient Mediterranean, propagated by merchants.
The boldface here is to highlight the prosodic stress. The superscript letter S is to mark vowels that would be the shortest, in proximity with prosodically prominent positions:
8 You left me, sweet, two le_gз_cies, —
5 A le_Sgз_cy Sзf love
8 A Hea_Svзn_ly Fa_Sthзr would con_tent,
5 Had He Sthз of_Sfзr of;
8 You left me baund_Sdз_rēz of pain
5 SCз_pa_Sciзs as the sea,
8 Be_tween e_tзr_nı_ty and time,
5 Your con_Ssciзs_Snзss and me.
In the word “boundaries”, the diphthong does not make two complete vowels, but it can “add up” with the adjacent Sз. The word “capacious” has the [pei] result in [pey], that is, a NON-SYLLABIC VOCOID [y], as in the word year. In “eternity”, word stress is on the central quality з.
With this verse, Emily Dickinson would have proved she was capable of ancient patterns, yet her other poems show it was not her intention to adhere. Ancient or classicist patterns were indeed capable of acting as a kind of “corset” that took away part the appeal from language. An overall deliberation on Emily Dickinson’s patterning fits with the Third Series more.
Feel welcome to the free book over the Internet Archive: page 193 tells about a word taken much too neuro-physiologically, in Emily Dickinson's works. The word is pain, a common noun.

NOTKA TŁUMACZKI
Legat jasno wskazuje na Starożytność. Angielski przedimek nieokreślony kieruje ku czasom przedchrześcijańskim, gdy postać jednego niebiańskiego ojca nie była powszechna:
„Ojciec jakiś w Niebie by rad,
Jak by Mu przeznaczyć...”
8 You left me, sweet, two le_gз_cies, —
5 A le_Sgз_cy Sзf love
8 A Hea_Svзn_ly Fa_Sthзr would con_tent,
5 Had He Sthз of_Sfзr of;
8 You left me baund_Sdз_rēz of pain
5 SCз_pa_Sciзs as the sea,
8 Be_tween e_tзr_nı_ty and time,
5 Your con_Ssciзs_Snзss and me.
