There was once a loyal minister
Who was much envied by the king
For his earthly blessedness
Of having nine generations
Living together under the same roof.
Once the king asked him
The secret of his success,
And the minister asked for a paper,
On which he wrote a hundred times
Two words: endurance and indulgence.
Instead of taking that as a commentary
On the family welfare, I have ever after
Envied this example, and write ‘indulgence’
On red paper and paste it on my house-door
With subtitling: ‘Endurance is the best heritage.’
But so long as the family system exists and
So long as community is built on the principle
That a man is not alone but attains his full being
Only in living in harmonious social relationships,
It’s easy to see how indulgence must be regarded
As a virtue and must grow naturally out of community.
For in such a society, endurance has a reason for existence.
I was fortunate to grow up in a loving family, with the extended family usually only a short drive away. Those things have changed much, that is the way of the world.
You put the family/community together and the answer to "getting along" is clear...."endurance and indulgence"! You expounded on that soooo well, Alexander!
This poem has a powerful message that is especially appropriate in these times where the "endurance" and "indulgence" of our families and communities are so much at risk. Well done!
The familiar lament of dual-career parents raising children is, "I just can't do it all." The Libra Solution provides an alternative - a more satisfying and sustainable work and life approach - to the overwrought modern day norm.
Let this coming of age story of a boy named Bean take you back to a simple time. Set in a small southern town in the 1960's, encircled by a river and gleaming white cotton fields.
I was fortunate to grow up in a loving family, with the extended family usually only a short drive away. Those things have changed much, that is the way of the world.
