When Women Chewed

When I was growing up, many older women chewed tobacco or smoked a pipe. All people in my region spoke with a strong Appalachian dialect. Today, however, all this has changed. Old women don’t chew tobacco anymore, nor do they smoke pipes. And the Appalachian dialect is slowly disappearing. It all depends on which of our 55 counties in West Virginia you’re driving through.

When Women Chewed

There she goes
Ain’t seen her in awhile
Cause she don’t come outta
That old rough-lumbered house
Throwed against the hillside
Less she’s outta chewin’ baccer
Sometimes on a hot summer day
She be walkin’ down the road
An I be drivin’ along real slow-like
An I stop an ask she wonna ride
She git in an if she say anythang
Hit said through clenched teeth
Cause o’ that chew in her mouth
Make her need to spit real bad
An after she in the car for awhile
She asks ‘bout my mama an daddy
I tell ‘er they doin’ all right thank ye
Finely we git ta the store
An I stop an let ‘er outta my car
She spits in a big ol’ pile o’ dust
An I poke on down the road
Tryin’ ta sang like Hank Wims
Wonderin' why he had ta die so young
My brother say he’d rather anybody die
Sides as good a sanger like Hank Wims

And smoked cigars. I really enjoyed the vernacular. But was a bit surprised that the lady did not spit out the window while they were traveling on. And I miss Hank Williams even now, trying to sing his songs without ever getting close to his twang in the deep country way.

Keep trying to imitate the way he sang, "Cool, clear waatteerrr…"

Gone are the spittoons by the house entry and in all establishments like saloons. Baseball players and people trying to quit smoking are the last holdouts. Don't think I could love and kiss a woman who chewed.

There's just something so special about the things you write! I do love the thangs you writ here! Jest 'minds me-a Ol' Mammy Yocum, when she useter be in the ol' newspapers. This was a delightful ride with your chewing lady friend, way back when.
The way you express everything seems so realistic for that time! Love the way your brother puts his two cents in, too!

p.s. Did you ever hear the Chew Tobacco Rag?
We used to have it on a 78 record! Pting, ptu!

Friend Connie
