And yet, still another ... Non-Poem ! I Lie a lot !

D.N.R. © - Tom Hyland - 11/2613 DO NOT RESUSCITATE ! It is my understanding that Many people Who ... Although they have Written "Living Wills" ... And they have Told their Family Members So ... When 911 is called and the EMT's Arrive ... They Automatically Perform their 'Life-Saving' Duties ... REGARDLESS of Any Written Instructions ... UNLESS the Patient is WEARING a 'D.N.R.' BRACELET! Per Encarta World English Dictionary: "living will' - noun - a document, typically signed in advance while in good health, in which somebody declines to be kept alive artificially by life-support systems in case of a terminal illness" If the above information is Correct ... It DEFEATS the Entire Intention of the Testator! THAT SUCKS! If the part about the Bracelet is True ... THEN I WANT ONE !!! WHERE Does One Get One? HOW Does One Get One? Is It Similar to a Hospital I.D. Bracelet ? i.e. - a Plastic Imprinted Band ? Or ... a Metal Chain-Link Bracelet ... Similar to those Worn for Allergies ? Does Anyone Out There KNOW? Please ADVISE ! I WANT ONE !!! While we are on this Subject of Health ... Let me be Perfectly Clear ... Since I got my Auto License at Age 19 ... I HAVE BEEN INDEPENDENT for 54 YEARS ! I Do Not Wish to Be a ... VEGETABLE ! NOR A BURDEN TO OTHERS! NOR A FORLORN HOPELESS SOUL ... SHOVED INTO A NURSING HOME ... TO VEGETATE INDEFINITELY! If I Can't Bathe Myself ... Wipe My Own Butt ... Feed Myself ... Travel Independently ... JUST SHOOT ME !!! I HAVE ALWAYS BELIEVED IN 'DEATH WITH DIGNITY' ! QUALITY OF LIFE IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN QUANTITY ! If My Mental Acuity, or Intellect Has Diminished ... To That of a SLUG ... PULL THE PLUG !!! Comatose State of Indeterminable Length ... DITTO! TOTALLY BLIND ? DITTO! Remember Al Pacino in the Movie ... "Scent of a Woman" ? Gim'me a 45, or a Glock ... and I'll Do It ! Some May Deem Me a COWARD ... SO BE IT ! I Feel the Same Way About Prison ! I'D RATHER BE DEAD ... THAN CAGED LIKE AN ANIMAL ! In the Final Analysis, Is it Not an Individual's CHOICE? The Old Saying Is: "Where There's Life, There's Hope!" My Answer ... BULL-SHIT ! I Highly Recommend an Old 1973 Movie "Soylent Green" ... In Edward G. Robinson's Last Film Appearance, Before His Real Death ... There is a Very Dramatic Euthanasia Scene: With a Visual and Musical Montage ... A Display of Forests, Rivers, Ocean Life, Now ... All EXTINCT in the Year 2022. Wherein, After a Lethal Drug Is Administered ... HE DIES WITH DIGNITY ... In a Government Clinic Called "HOME" ! Over-Population ... Starvation ... Natural Resources Exhausted ... Ozone Layer Destroyed ... Just What Do People EAT? "Soylent Green" ... A Green Wafer ... Supposedly from Plankton ... I have noted that these apply to me daily:

I Can't Bathe Myself ...
Wipe My Own Butt ...
Feed Myself ...
Travel Independently ... (Once I'm properly dressed and my driving belt is in place, I can drive myself around for the day, but not travel without assistance)

So should I shoot myself?

Otherwise, I tend to agree with everything that you've written except the part about being blind. For that all I have to do is think about Helen Keller or Ray Charles, and I wouldn't pull the plug just yet.

Between the old-fashioned Hippocratic oath, greedy hospitals and doctors, and the weird "right to life" cult, its time that we start to take our right to our own decisions back from all these "holy are than thou" decision-makers.

And I thought you were writing about the damned Department of Natural Resources! ;-) Or worse yet, about the Jersey Devil.

Glad to hear you aren't in the Pit of Despond, my friend.

About 9 years ago I found two obviously biased, non-family-members to witness my living will which required them to agree that I was 'of sound mind' and capable of making such a momentous decision as to whether I was willing to be kept alive by machines. I'm not at all sure my mind has ever been 'sound' but it does function. I watched my mother become ever less capable of communicating because of a brain tumor and my father retreat into a nearly vegetative state with Alzheimers I never want to be either place. Then I watched my husband suffer, bedridden, for 3 months. I don't want to be there either. Why can't we have a Dr. Kevorkian? Don't we have a right to choose when existence has become more burden than life? Sign me up for the bracelet, too, Tom, when you find out where to get one.

I agree; if I can't function anymore, I want to leave this earth. And Soylent Green's grim prophetic future is getting much closer than many choose to believe:

'a dystopian future suffering from pollution, overpopulation, depleted resources, poverty, dying oceans, and a scorching climate due to the greenhouse effect.'
