She went outside to check the mail

under dark and stormy skies,

her bare feet kicking stones along the road.

She opened up the rusted box and sifted through it all,

then her eyes lit up as she saw the Morse code.

The envelope was wrinkled up,

but the dots remained the same.

She knew that he had sent her love

in his US Navy way.

Then the rain came down and she rushed in,

her mom was on the phone.

She ran into her bedroom

so that she could be alone.

As she opened up the letter,

she heard a tiny ping.

Then she noticed on her wooden floor

was a golden wedding ring.

“Mama look at what he sent to me,

I’m going to be a bride.

Please tell me that you’re happy,

that your heart is full of pride.

Don’t be sad that I am leaving home,

I’ll write you every day.”

Then she hugged her mom and listened close

to see what she would say.

She cried when she listened to her mother.

She told her sailors never make good dads.

She told her they are never to be trusted.

It crushed her heart to think of him like that.

“Oh mama I still love him,

and I’m sorry I must go.

You have been there for me all my life,

and I‘ve always loved you so.

But remember me when I was young,

and remember all you said.

And you told me how our lives move on

and your dreams that I would wed?”

She ran outside to clear her mind,

Her dress all soaking wet.

She pictured him in Navy Blues,

And remembered when they‘d met.

So she ran back home with tear filled eyes,

and told her how she felt.

She said “Mama I am big girl now,

and he makes my heart just melt.”

As she turned to walk away with pride,

she felt her mama’s hand.

Then she looked her straight into her eyes,

and she took her rightful stand.

“Mama, I’m a sailors girl

and I’m proud to say I am.

Today he’s sailing off to sea,

to a country called Iran.

They’re dropping off Marines to help,

and I hope he’ll be okay.

Mama he’s my sailor boy

and I’ll marry him in May.”

Her mama cried and turned away,

Her little girl had grown.

She hoped that she would wed someday,

but someone close to home.

“I love you child” she said to her.

Love hurts when it is right.

So I’ll let you go to be with him,

I do not want to fight.”

Then she smiled at her and wiped the tears,

and she helped her daughter pack.

She remembered how she felt the day

she received a shiny plaque.

We’re sorry for your loss today,

We mourn for him as well,

Your husband was a Hero ma’am,

And in our hearts he’ll dwell.

She packed her things and took a breath,

then glanced around her room.

My little girl has grown up now

It just seems all too soon.

“Mama I am happy now,

please don’t cry for me today.

You were proud of daddy when he served,

And you still are to this day.”

Then she took her bags and looked around,

her home was all she knew.

But her future was a empty book,

To her heart she must be true .

He’s her sailor boy her special love,

he holds her heart with care.

And the love they have together now,

Is the answer to her prayers.

She prayed to God to send to her,

A Hero like her dad.

Even though he lost his life in war,

His purpose made her glad.

She knew that he was fighting for,

the freedom she had lived.

So she prayed to God to send a man,

With strength enough to give.

Now she lives a life of honoring,

her husband every day.

Knowing what he does to keep her safe,

In the good old Navy way.

She respects him so as he does her,

for the life they live as one.

Embracing each day with courage and hope,

Knowing war is never done.

So they pray together silently,

The night before he leaves.

Knowing ships abroad will join at once,

to maintain our country’s peace.

As morning comes, it’s time to go.

Her sailor packs his stuff.

They hug so tight and kiss goodbye.

She knows this will be rough.

He walks away with bag in hand,

her love and her life.

But knows this is the life she chose,

To be a Navy wife.
