The wedding ring saga
It's not been that long since I discarded my old wedding ring
The deep old ridge on my finger is plain for all to see
It gave guys on the make who seemed to only want one thing
Look at me like I’m some kind of desperate divorcee
I never got this attention when I wore my wedding band
Never even got chatted up, I think it’s safe to say
Their eyes went straight to the third finger there on my left hand
And while initially interested, sadly then they looked away
Now you might want to know why I don’t wear it anymore
Because if the truth be known, I never have been wed
Being the target of chancers was a thing I would deplore
So my idea was to pretend to be a married gal instead
It worked for years I must admit, no-one paid me any mind
Wolf whistlers in their numbers became a feature of the past
But as the years went by I didn’t realise I would find
No one would even notice me, now the die was cast
So I took off my old wedding ring when the finger started swelling
I put it in my jewelry box and there it would remain
And truly it’s no word of a lie, there simply was no telling
That on the social dating front I had stood to gain
They came out of the woodwork, in large numbers and in droves
Guys who had dismissed me and never looked before
Not wearing the ring was strategic I suppose
Suitors were now keenly beating a trail to my door
Well I’ve put the ring back on now, I really can’t keep up
I’ve been on more dates than you have had hot dinners
It’s exhausting, I’d rather stay home with my feet up
This dating lark simply aint for faint-hearted beginners
(I thought I was a loser but I’m still one of the winners)
You may not believe this, but I never paid any attention to the ring finger. Perhaps that is why I was not a player in the mating game. I do recall that some of the attractive women that I encountered over the years were married and I already know it.
I've always looked at rings as frivolous (and sometimes bragging) decoration. They seem to be more the jewelers' profit-making realm rather than any value in true marriage.
