Ode to a much-loved very gentle gentleman

I wrote this on the day of the 'event' and a full 8 months has gone passed and the sting of loss is still sharp and painful. I subsequently set it aside for obvious reasons, but I had to add it to my list of verses. It's not meant to be a masterpiece; just my thoughts put down in rhyme that depicts somewhat what occurred during lockdown.

No Father’s Day, no happy birthday,

the pandemic had taken so much away

Curtailing our natural closeness

we hadn’t had since last Christmas.

And staying safe, we had to comply,

as the days and weeks and months flew by

With some all alone, some stuck at home,

and only reachable by telephone

This new unknown was so desired

as we all did what was then required

And with all worst cases, it covers all the bases

when one faces sadness leaving bitter traces

Because during this unprecedented lockdown saga,

you'd think things couldn't get much harder …

but that’s when I sadly lost my father!

I'm so sorry for the loss of your father.

A very touching paean of fond recollection to one's departed father, this piece heightens our sensitivity to both the challenging constraints that SARS-0CoV-2 is imposing upon us all, but the oh-so-important aspects of the fatherhood that means so much to all of us, as well. Over and over it has been repeated throughout history that, the critical role of maternal nurturing aside, an equally loving paternal male role-model is an essential ingredient of any well-adjusted, productively actualised family's ability to thrive. I lost my own father at age 4; I know only too well how important a 'gentle' but committed and loving father is to the happiness of all of us in this often-troubled world we all must exist in! Thanks for sharing this aspect of your own life with us!
