I appologize now to my friends for this bleak offering..it has occupied my mind for days, longer than i thought and not of my normal fare here.

Standing alone shrouded in the dark
no one is here, scattered for the night.
The banchees, witches and crippled wraith
all are elsewhere, now is the silence.
I peer out the window at nothing
as two old companions appear.
Not a footfall to be heard, they glide
it's the Grim Reaper and Mister Dark.

We've walked together these two and I
many times as the years have gone by.
I look to the two and say "again"
Dark raises his hand and mists roll in.
The Reaper spins around laughing low
but the only sound, a beating heart.
The first had been my old grandmother
ere was I ten, sole I sat beside her.

She had passed with a whimper and sigh
and I was left to tell those that cried.
Then the Uncle who flew as we sat
followed by Mom's stepdad while we slept.
Then at fifteen my girlfriend's Uncle
who her brother and I tried to stop.
But a few feet to late, took his own
with a blast, his I felt to scatter.

The next year came the husband I knew
who pulled the trigger while i stood by.
held his two to my side, eyes hidden
while my best friends arms wrapped his wifes head.
After graduation two and I left
the two came back, fore I took the test.
These companions visited often
by the bitter end there were five more.

Soon sitting by Mother in hospital
and then her mother came close behind.
All these times they must leave an odor
not to the nose but a stench on soul.
Fore try as I may not a maid stayed
only these dark twos return continued.
Soon came the last grandpa I couldn't
Then dear sis body withered away.

In the west an old Marine went slow
then another leatherneck in the East.
As I cleaned this last spittle away
before telling his family to grieve.
Now the visigas start to fade clear
you two and I parted thus last time.
But the stench remains after their gone
you see it's me, thats why I'm alone.

Most certainly a soul-stirring account and honest (though painful) sharing. Love and peace to you, Budd.

The words "a stench on soul" echo in my mind. Death does leave its mark. Our souls shrivel away bit by bit by each loss.

This piece arrests my awareness that the mind is never asleep and has little tolerance for those who slumber life away.

Our lives have paralleled one another in this instance.

We cannot control what is around us, it is part of everyone's path Budd. It does not make anything less painful or shocking to us in any case. Loss of those we love and care for around us always hurts when they move on to the other side.

Here's the deal, they know you are a strong soul. They know although painful to you, you could handle all this and comfort those around you. So when you ask yourself, "Why me?" Why do I lose all those I love and care for around me... that is your answer. Your strong, your are the one who is the helper of others as am I.

Bless all that you have been through for I am one who knows.

Love and Light

Necessary airing out of your emotions, Budd. Holding things deep within is a killer sometimes. Better, much better, to let it out, and that, my friend, you have done.

Powerfully sad. I hope bright and sunny soon replaces dark and bleak.

You must be a very strong soul to carry this burden Budd.
Good that you are able to share this with us, talking about it will not take away the burden but it can sometimes help to carry it.

It's good to pour it out. No one is above these thoughts. This too shall pass.

Love ya!

Lots of pain and grief packed into this poem. Pray that it all gets better real soon.

God bless you,

John

I am affected with pain for that which I read. The open door of death and dying that surround the life of one. One lone soul to direct his own shadow..The shadows that walk within and without. I applaud you, Budd...The quill of your soul writes its own tears...

Sandy
