A sound was heard in the dark of night
up on the roof giving us a fright.
Jen and I sitting on the stairs high
waiting to see if Santa comes by.
Huddled together still as a mouse
to see this burglar enter our house.
Some cookies and milk for the fat thief
we'd left by the fire in belief.
Sleepy we got sitting in the dark
watching the embers crackle and spark.
The flash of red we missed in our doze
quick as we'd heard, his coming and goes.
The soft chuckle he made as he worked
nor the whisp up the chimney he jerked.
Did not wake us to get our first sight
of Santa Claus on Christmas Eve night.
The smell of cocoa on the dawns break
woke us both up smiling awake.
Yes we had missed to glimpse him again
but the toys at the tree showed where he'd been.
Who can't beleive a fat little elf
would magically give of himself.
to bring joy and cheer to good boys and girls
on this special day around the world.
Enjoyed reading this one Budd, although I am no longer a child, and Christmas has passed, I still remember the child-like wonder I experienced as a child!
Thanks for sharing, and continued success!

Shades of, "The Night before Christmas." That classic poem ran through my mind as I read. You have created your own little classic with this beautifully written child's view of staying up for Santa.
As a kid, my siblings and I always left milk and (home-made) cookies for Santa AND carrots for the reindeer, which were always dutifully munched upon mysteriously during the night of Christmas Eve. Enjoyed this utterly charming poem as it resurrects memories from the deep past.
You're keeping the tradition alive, Budd.
Your poetry makes me want to believe in Santa Clause forever, a very clever poem dear Budd, we have the right to believe for however long we desire, thanks for the great faith filled poem. Have a great evening. Merry Christmas
Your work here makes one think of all the simpler ways we used to find happiness. Sad that the world seems determined to destroy anything simple and rewarding, even if it has a touch of fantasy... the good kind. Not the kind that dictators build their delusional reality with.
Dear readers, this is my third book of poems, and inside are a special collection of what have turned out to be not only MY personal favorites, but also the favorites of many of YOU. Some of these have never been available in print before...
Thanks for sharing, and continued success!
