He was a toddler
spit-shined, ready-to-go
proud Mom,
on her knees in front of him
beaming from ear to ear
lavished kisses all over his face,
then exclaimed,
“I love you!
Oooooh, you’re sooooo cute!”
her own mother,
sitting nearby,
fussed
“Don’t tell him that!”
dumbfounded,
she asked her why
“Because, he’ll grow up to be conceited,”
came the mother’s reply
Some years later,
she overheard her father
beaming, bragging
to his friend
of the honors she’d been bestowed –
she heard him tell the man
how proud he was of her
When asked
“Why wouldn’t you tell me that?”
he said, “I thought you knew,
Very important message Tami...we can never 'spoil' a person with too much love, and there isn't a moment to waste in building loved ones up with love, cheerful affection, and praise! Such things echo in our souls ... indeed, reverberate, eternal! Great poem!

Ah yes, my mother used to say the same thing.... I understand now the intent, yet we do all need positive reinforcement, don't we? We grow towards the light, in the shadows we wither.
