1972 ~ A southern summer weekend
at a borrowed lake house.
I watch my tiny precious sons
explore rocks, bugs and
a weathered wooden dock.
We splash in the cool water,
see sailboats floating in the distance
and star-like sparkles on the lake.
Shag carpet under a bamboo chair swing
suspended from a beam in the cabin's ceiling.
Delightful laughter as two little brothers
move back and forth,
like the pendulum of a clock.
2006 ~ Endless days
at a cabin on the water.
Hernando Beach, British Columbia.
One of the brothers, his wife and daughters
join friends for boating, hiking
and exploring the beach’s many treasures.
Bald Eagles appear along with Seals,
Deer and Hummingbirds.
Each day brings wonderful,
rich experiences.
An old bamboo chair swing,
mended with duct tape
hangs from the cabin’s ceiling.
Delightful laughter from two little sisters,
unaware of time’s passing
and the repetition of history.
A wonderful retrospective and juxtapose. You have made a terrific point in this construct, and I agree with Jude, it moved upon the heart marvelously Janet. Well done!

What a lovely demonstration of history repeating itself....which it often does - but this is such a lovely set of vignettes - moments in time that bring a smile.
I got the most wonderful goosebumps while reading this touching poem, Janet. I always love reading your work, but this one really touched a chord within since I've now come full circle, myself, and recognize in my grandchildren much the same vision as you've written about here. Excellent contrast, excellent writing.

Wonderful juxtaposition of the two generations. The two little sisters being "unaware of time's passing and the repetition of history" is a beautiful way to wrap up this piece of writing. Thanks.
Great visual images transmitted in an origianal format that hits like a punch of deja veux. With three children raised and out on their own and now three grandchildren I know exactly of what you speak.
Using Calgary as a backdrop the author satirizes the self-serving nature of the public as it continues to fatten itself, not only physically, but egotistically as well.
