The soft evening sky
Hushes the Hudson
While a lone heron
Searches for his supper
Among the marshy shallows.
On River Road
Fishermen watch their poles
As the Hudson whispers itself to sleep.
The Esopus Lighthouse darkly watches
A lone sailboat
That plies the drowsing waters,
While I,
Alone
In the park,
Count threes and sevens
In fancy footwork
As the river murmurs her approval.
The Dutch may have given the Hudson its name,
But ‘tis the Irish who brought it to life.
The D&H* coal boats,
Manned by swarthy Irish
Singing plaintive tunes
Of old Eire,
Raced to Tidewater.
The captains
Dreamt of Ireland’s shores
As their feet kept rhythm
In threes and sevens
On the wooden decks.
The love affair with
Lord of the Dance
And Feet of Flames
Brings me to the Hudson’s banks
Where I attempt the inimitable
Threes and sevens
As the sky’s hues deepen
To peach and gold.
