Purgatory

by Jeff Mason — Read all 207 poems by Jeff Mason

sometimes... darkness wins

Friday, January 30, 2015

I now reside in that place... between Heaven and Hell,
allegedly temporary...
In truth, Hell would comfort me;
Instead, rash uncertainty is gutting me...
no cleansing shall be done here... not for me;
Heaven shall deny me sanctuary;
and here...
there is no solid ground underfoot;
no shining light, beckoning me;
just a grim and musty tunnel; its coldness... unforgiving.

Even echoes falter here; falling shallow amid the onyx flatness,
swallowed within the entrails of these all-consuming walls
that scream in anguished silence,
draining every drop that remains of life and all its sacred essence.

The sway that's held over my soul... at the present, is interminable.

This is no place to be;
no breath can thrive in darkness so profound and so complete.

The flames of Hades would be welcome recompense;
this limbo between hope and hopeless...
denies all cries for absolution...
allows no peace; accepts no penance
and in its harshness, it is its own true retribution.
So I am captive here,
punished by my own self-flagellation,
far more than any Maker could inflict with judgment meted out
upon this vacuous remnant of a
once-thriving spirit;
now lost... to wander among the tombstones
of those who've failed to gain forgiveness
from the ones they've wronged somehow...
though offered... never accepted;

Thus I remain...for now, unforgiven;
a lifeless, anguished shadow... trapped... in this infernal forlorn in-between.

This held me like a vice, Jeff. It's stark and reasoned clarity resonates as down those infernal interminable halls and the sensible tone is chilling. There seems to be no hyperbole here; the experiences are meant and felt. You've certainly given me cause to consider how infinitely to be feared this place you describe is - and we scarcely give a thought to it, caught, as we are, between our twin fixations of the polarities of Heaven and Hell. In a deeply spiritual experience I had once, I felt as if cast out into the deepest, darkest, blackest space in the whole universe. The pain I felt was loneliness above everything else - and this from a person who loves physical aloneness and can happily spend much time on my own. What strikes me above all is how it's the self-flagellation that is the terror and the torture here. To be not able to get away from the perpetual persecutor must be torment. It's the self that needs to be both forgiving and forgiven and that can be the hardest thing on earth. I pray God that you are no longer trapped in this heart-rending in-between and that you have been able to move to a place of restoration and resolution. Very powerfully written, Jeff. xx

I have a friend who insists that this existence is hell. I can see now that I will be reading more of your material.

Love ya!

Ahhh . . . Purgatory indeed, Jeff Mason. For the last few days I have been reading the modern translation of "The Divine Comedy." Just have barely open the first book, "Inferno." You write very deep and very dark. there was a time when I was into the dark, poetical and otherwise. Yep, I still write dark, but not with as much passion as I used to.

I've read this three times, each time I feel the pain more deeply. Sounds more like pure hell than purgatory Jeff. Wonderfully penned from the soul.

Great poetry excellently composed though grim
and profound in its texture.... May you find peace within

Truly a dark persecution of the soul but with such eloquence in its signature.

Very thrilling poetry. Raw and honest, and a far-reaching ending ~
Darling, every day's a new day with no mistakes in it, and anyone who doesn't get that has a problem.
Blessings,
Christine

I have missed your work Jeff. Your brilliance shines through the darkness of this write. I sincerely hoping you weren't talking from your own personal perspective.

Best line: "Thus I remain...for now, unforgiven; a lifeless, anguished shadow...trapped...in this infernal forlorn in-between."

It perfectly summed up the rest of the poem.

This is a profound description of deep despair, and loss. There are a few golden rules in life and one is that the past is past, the future is unknown, and the present moment is all that matters. And another golden rule is that to believe in dreams is to give wings to the imagination thereby creating a materialization! But of course Poet, you know this.

With respect and admiration,

I'm a believer in spirits. I feel that some souls are lost because they know not where they should belong, as it is written in this unique poem. Sometimes the souls need direction in order to go towards the light.

I haven't seen your name in the global community for years, Jeff. Your work always was, and is, a welcome stimulation. You've created a fine atmosphere in this piece. "no breath can thrive in darkness so profound and so complete." Amen! Peace... rlc

In your bio, you state that you often write "very dark poetry." That is an understatement. From what I read here, this person is under great torment from self-inflicted wounds. Very heavy, to say the least.

Wow! "The flames of Hades would be recompense...." Rather like doing a cannonball into the Fiery Lake...and "...your own flagellation" brings to mind my piece "Twisted Trail"; "I keep beatin' myself up for things way back in the past; I will flog myself forever to my core; I will beat and beat and beat 'till I can beat no more...." -- this is some very fine writing. ~ duke
