needful things

by Jeff Mason — Read all 207 poems by Jeff Mason

Sometimes, no matter how much you beg forgiveness... it never comes. Isn't there a point where true friendship should trump any stupidity on either friend's part? Especially when fault is admitted; and forgiveness is humbly begged for.

I am hoping there is life left in this void, yet
all things sacrificed more outside of rhyme
and few paths sanctified beyond a pit of bolder breadth
harsher fullness scampering in time with tamed but vivid shouts
in dragging bogs of muted fogs;
the knife feels it;
yet no, it doesn't kill; for I could never hate you.

though oceans through their motions crash and spill;
as heartbeats still... live amid my sometimes haste impatience
bitter pills for all the wiser ills;
and there I showed you: blood is made beyond this realm
supremely forged... engorged...
where once there shone a glimpse of alabaster recompense
beneath a cauldron born of iron
upon a wasted spell, I savored all the shades
of every step, step, step of Hell.
a depth that sang a thousand voices; more than ages old.

I can't feel my pulse, alone adrift, and further from my faded self
that screams of yearning abandonment... by you
imbibing all the cries of seasons cold
and yon you twirl, beyond my reach again

a caste apart

this sinking, thinking darkness
adjacent stirs have here become a curs'ed malady
(a faceless drone of whirs; etched in walls, betrothed
and ... whispering amongst themselves)

All brighter sights evoke contentious ringing traces
for bleakness-brimming; unwishing vexes softly spoken;
aloud their jeer erases deepest fear as yet unbroken,
sealed within my deepest hold, unbridled acrid fumes
bequeath their heeded token

where fate sure -- rules with baleful dooms
and pounding throngs now shout; shriek, then hush;
sending desp'rate demons out;
devil's brew; intensive heat now boiling you, from your insides;
persistent aches, as dust from ashes stray.

And I shall speak no more, but wait!
I know for sure mere wants are fruitless here;
always... amid this unforgiveness
bending toward a senseless ending; refusing heeding.

I am surely yoked forever,
stilled and bound... amid ceaseless profuse bleeding.
in this death that life left so bereft;
no matter how much I shall pray in constant fervent pleading.

Positively riveting, can't stop reading. I don't like pain, but something healing about reading your writing.

This sounds more like a lover's lament than a paean to a lost friend. I seldom read through long poems but I did with this one. It reminds me of experiences in the past. Keep on writing and keep on keeping on.

Heartbreaking but beautifully written. Your heart bleeds through every aching word.

"Everyone says forgiveness is a lovely idea until they have something to forgive," said C.S. Lewis.

well written, Jeff ...

This is very Shakespearean in its presentation. Something that I cannot do, alas.

I find that the "knife that does not kill" is probably the tongue. From what has been said, let "out of the bag" so to speak, can never be retrieved and that's why forgiveness is not forthcoming.

As I said before, I certainly hope this is not about you. For if it is, you are "surely yoked forever, stilled and bound."

This is utterly beautiful writing, at the end of your frayed hope.
Remember, even forgiveness and love unreturned holds every freedom's gift for your heart and every color of the rainbow.
It will flow back to you from somewhere else if not from her, but you have got to try to let it go, this overwhelming grief.
Blessings,
Christine

"Needful Things" made me immediately think of Stephen King's novel with such a title. But I can relate to the theme of your poem; in fact, I just sent an email to my sister much along those lines. Thank you for sharing, Jeff. Love and peace,

Can feel the ball and chain in every syllable of these strong lines, Jeff. This is cathartic writing that wriggles and writhes in sawdust and ashes. But Phoenix-like, you'll rise again. No one has the right to keep another so imprisoned but the key may be in your own hands. True freedom is to be found in self-forgiving; once you understand that reason and truth and right-standing rests with the one who has sincerely offered apology, then you can walk free. Palpable and agonising poetry which has long-meditated with this hot coal. xx

This is a very deep and touching write. You have dug to the very core of your heart and soul.

Love ya!

A moving classical dedication and plea, where choice of words and phrasing arrest in the reader both empathy and admiration for the creator who has found such contrasts in an deeply moving emotional experience. Kudos.

Ahhh . . . In your notes ahead of the poem you say, "Isn't there a point where true friendship should trump any stupidity on either friend's part?" This is absolute truth, and I have found that in my particular case it has been applied, I am grateful to say. The poem was from your heart and it was applying itself to the quote from your notes in a very precise manner.
