a shard and many (Veteran's tribute)

by Jeff Mason — Read all 207 poems by Jeff Mason

This was from 1997, inspired from the work of Paul Bauman and another unknown author. My tribute to American veterans.

Thursday, November 13, 2003

should they take days to find you
having lost half your blood through your selfless wounds
and not telling anyone
(until you shook from weakness,
drawing the onyx stones of your eyes to the bed
moaning through the meat of your lungs
as I a ghost haunt the numb shell of your hallway)
and find a mere husk of a soldier
filled with traces of shrapnel and heartless foreign objects
as you are to me now
a shard and many
absorbing desperate questions you cannot answer...
to listen would require more
than merely measurement
if only I could follow the certain hell of you
chasing restless winds to the ocean and back without sleep...
to truly see would be the breadth of a bird's eye
at the height of a migration fierce enough
to render stasis into symbiosis...
a pronouncement more fatal than death itself;
your pulse scattering pigeon tracks
across the snow
of a vacuous listless screen
that talks for you in façade of pulses
that feign such poor excuse for boldest breath now slow...
while the pain of lying there, yet to yield
falls as heavy rain on that windshield
endlessly before you in your never-waking dreams
the torrential skies now weep
the wail of a cry so desperately deep;
the abyss of a senseless world
driven to treacherous, all-consuming screams
on roads as numerous and void as your now empty veins
losing themselves
beneath your skin's vast yellow plains;
your smile a distant fading map
for this your last room...
and its final cursed white blinds
open upon the parking lot
where they brought you
visionary and reeking
out of the grip of darkness
and into a blinding lethal judgment
of fateful imminent words
behind drawn whispered curtains and
cold, fate-sealed steely doors.

Jeff, I notice that this has not been reviwed since 2003 and here we are in 2007 and this piece is as poignant and true and gut-wrenching as it was when you wrote it. How can this go on and on and on? I am so proud of you for being a Marine. The hearts of all Marines beat as one. We NEED to be reminded that these men and women are not over there playing in the sand! They are "moaning through the meat of their lungs and are filled with traces of shrapnel" this very day just as others before them in 2003 and so many, many years before that. Thank God there are people like you who can put this disgusting subject into a venue in which we can read and digest it without too much harm to our sensitive systems. If this were to be required of all of us...heaven help our country. Thank you for being there for us in a true physical way and in an emotional and literary way. Without you and those like you, many of us, myself included, might not fully realize the sacrifices made for us. I honor you.

Jeff,

Thank you for sharing the poem.
This poem reminds me of the first book that I wrote. It's about a veteran who was injured in Vietnam. The book is "Trust In Me". It was suppose to be a tribute to veterans, too.

A hard write, Jeff, and a wonderful, wonderfully REAL tribute to those who put themselves in Harm's Way to defend home, country, and ideals! Words like these need to be shared, so others do not ever forget the sacrifices made in their name!

Powerful and a tribute to those who have served.
They have made so many sacrifices.

harrowing, a deep rendition of more a pathos than a tribute, good for usa literature if it helps them to identify with suffering beyond their own in its affliction. add to library.

The truth betold! And you have told it, with depth, compassion and reality as it should. There are no rosy coloured glasses to be worn in this. Though some don them with monotonous regularity. I think it helps them sleep at night.
Thanks for this, we all need to look at it sometime in our lives.

i'm in awe of this outstanding, graphic intense, vivid write

war is hell, and war is ugly

and what we've done for our service men and women is even uglier

shame on the government for abandoning those it asked (or demanded) to serve

i'm proud to have been in the united states air force (83-85), and i'm DAMN proud of the veterans

(((HUGS))) love and THANK YOU--this is going into my library

it may have been squeamish in nature, but that is exactly what these brave soldiers went through in order to fight for our country. few too many people don't know what they went through in defending our land, and then people wonder why a lot of veterans today suffer from ptsd (post traumatic stress disorder), nightmares, or vivid and often frightening flashbacks. may the truth be told, and may more people understand what our vets went through and continue TO go through as a result of war. powerful, powerful write; well done! BRAVO! :( (((HUGS)))

Jeff, these words are graphic, not near as graphic as what they all went through. I am quite sure there is a stern reason why they keep repeating, "War is Hell"
It's a place I've never visited except only through the stories and painful reflections of several that actually went, but I can tell you that whoever says all the stories are the same has no idea what they are talking about,,each one of those stories and their pains are unique to the one that witnessed them.
Your write was well deserving of the read,,our Veterans are well deserving for our gratitude. Thanks Jeff...Lisa

I feared reading this, I guess the truth can cut deep into a heart like mine. But if I did not read your work it would mean I fear life even more. It was sad and I now must find a poem of joy to help soften this strong write. It will be with my for a while humming in my mind in the back ground.
