When, at last, they set me free,
Where will I finally be?
When they decide to hand me the key,
What can the future hold for me?
I have grown so used to the dark
I’ve been suspended in,
Now, I am afraid of the Light
I fought to win.
I’ve been locked in this closet every day.
How, possibly, can I find my way?
All I feel is uncertainty.
No one taught me now to be free.
Now that the crack of Light in the door
Has become larger,
Each step I take towards the door
Has become harder.
I’ve been isolated here so long,
Freedom seems foreign
And growth seems wrong.
It might be safer just to stay where I am
But it’s better if I leave
Because I know, here I don’t belong.

In your case, during special education you learned that you could write well. That ability enabled you to leave the dark and come into the light of freedom to study with your peers all the way through college. Although it was fearful to do, it was the right thing.
