From a visit to a Jail I was moved to write a piece on how issues must pull at them!! It turned out quite "OK"
Openings
There they are - sitting alone
There they are - waiting for something
Doing things to pass the time
Dealing as well as they can
There they wait
Doubt hides in the shadows
It seeks to be their undoing
The way to the pit is doubt
It can bring such lies into lives
And subdues us to believe it's reality
There they doubt
Life's light is so dim for them
Only a glimmer of what could be
Sorrow builds on worry
And sorrow will sap their strength
There they sit - weaker still
It is cold there, in the shadows
Cold enough to chill even the stoutest heart
For fear is doubt's ever-present twin
It will tell man sad things too ...
Like shadow is all there is to this life
And that the light we heard of or have seen
Is unhealthy, too heavy to bear and cruel
Fearfully they linger on ...

Dare they hope?...
It all seems so endless
Things are not working out at all
Looking fora way out
Seeking for an opening
- There they hope
Hope is reborn…
A little light breaks through to them
Maybe they will not have to surrender
To the shadows of woe
Maybe they can yet make it
IF only they can find the ability to believe
- There they kneel, Praying
The light grows brighter
As the darkness fails
Doubt loses out to warmth & strength
Warmth from freedom given to believe
Strength from belief in the source of all love
Situations may not be like they'd wish
Reality will still try to tear at them
But the focus is changed
The essence of it will all be different
The LORD is with them now
They were waiting - for an opening
An opening - to a love more full & free
An opening - to what living should be
Believing that His love is still there for you & me
Believe & Live !
I can't imagine what it would be like to be incarcerated; I'm not sure I would be able to handle it. Your verses make me think, Michael. Love and peace to you,
While faith may reduce their fear and self concern, the ugly fact is that once incarcerated, the private justice/prison system will not lose its grip on them. Once out of prison may find that they are no longer welcomed in jobs or housing. They generally only have family or friends (sometimes very bad friends) to fall back on with no way of making an income except, to perhaps to start doing criminal activities again. It becomes a vicious cycle that no amount of faith can change.
We must come up with creative ways of giving those who have served their time at decent chance at life outside… Not spending time on the public dollar approaching $50,000 plus per year to warehouse them.
Michael, this is the first I've seen your work, and I like it A LOT.
