Schadenfreude Reigns

A poem that ponders the impact of schadenfreude on our society.

Schadenfreude Reigns

It seems so odd and morally devoid,

To live in a nation filled with schadenfreude.

But it’s not.

It’s all about what we got,

And others with nothing make our own seem a lot.

With schadenfreude rising,

It’s not so surprising,

When kindness takes a downward turn,

So that those with money to burn

Hide their faces from those who yearn,

For just the chance,

To dance the dance,

With Lady Liberty,

With equal opportunity,

In the home of the brave and the land of the free.

We must use our strength for our country to rise,

From schadenfreude’s reign where giving has fallen to lies,

Back to the promise that always rang,

From the Liberty Bell’s clapper to the people who sang,

Of purple mountain’s majesty and waving fields of grain,

In a land of plenty that all could attain.

America’s greatness has always been from the heart,

Open to all with a chance for a start.

We must turn our land’s obsession with greed,

Back to a place endowed with hope for those in need.

Stark, harsh, and real; a powerful message. Love, peace, and best wishes to you, Jerri,

Loved the irregular line length which added punch to the punchy bits and slowed down the deeper, more thoughtful points.

Well written Jerri, and appropriate sentiments for the time we live in too.

Not being a particular fan of rhyme, this piece struck me as perfect, giving not even a hint that you had to consult a thesaurus or rhyme dictionary (which far to many rhyme poems seem to suffer from such effort). Well done.

Thanking Ed and Jerry for helping my poor German. Statistically and not politically, what your poem states in terms of what is happening is true. And, in spite of what sharks and insiders claim, the opportunity to make a living with hard work and some skills is rapidly disappearing in favor of wealth and privilege gaining more wealth and privilege.

The strange part is people engaging in insider, greedy activity can't see where it is leading. Some kind of, "let them eat cake," syndrome.

My guess about your title word was "shady friends." You exposed it well. I agree with every word in you lovely poem. Well done.

I had to look up "schadenfreude," and for a word that is long and full of truthfulness, it actually hooked me, and I'll never forget the word. Uh, now spelling it is a different matter, don't ya know.
