How the littlest creatures become the spoils of war...

Poem Artwork

The sun was only the faintest eclipse,

obscured by swirling black smoke.

A blistering shower of tangerine, gold;

a deafening siege of assaults.

A voracious inferno consuming, engulfing

the blameless left in its path.

Amid chaos a pup

yelped from alien pain

as blood gushed forth from his chest.

All around him were wails of

bewilderment, grief…

cries very much like his own.

He caught a glimpse of his girl...

motionless, quiet, lying alongside the road.

As he inched to her side,

suffering mixed with relief.

He groaned as he nudged her chin, and her wrist.

Yet in spite of his pleas, she lay still.

He recalled what she’d said

as their world blew apart,

loving stories of Allah the Father.

“He adores dogs and kids.

When our time here is done,

Allah will come take us home.”

The dog knew she was gone.

He felt small and forlorn.

He waited, and waited, and waited…

Then a kind face appeared

as the puppy’s light dimmed.

Father Allah was taking him home.

My friend I just read this and am sobbing, literally sobbing. This was written as though you were right there and you took me there too. Who can even begin to understand the anguish of the poor animals who are victims of war? I keep thinking about the woman who came to my workshop and the story that she told about the little dog (her only friend) left behind in Afghanistan. 30 years on, she couldn't forget and now that she has shared her story, nor can I. Thank you for your incredible writing and your beautiful soul. Only one with insight and compassion could write like this. Please keep sharing your unique gifting with the world.

So heartrending, Shelly! I like that you called her "his girl" That's what we are to our pets. Are we their owners, or do they own us? My little Lacey certainly orders me around!
this sad story really tugs at my heartstrings. Thanks for sharing it through a dog's eyes.

This was a unique write, I love animals and have often wondered how they see things. I have a small house dog she is a terrior. I often catch her watching me as if in deep thought...great job.

So very very sad, and although you speak of war, this also reminded me of what many pets endured in Hurricane Katrina.

This was very touching, very sad and very real. I wish that all stories had a happy ending - perhpas this was the ending the pup wanted after all - tp be with her master. Great write, Girlfriend! I am in tears...

If not the Eagle, the neighbor you thought that you could trust. Life is very difficult and so very uncertain in many places on this planet. This is a touching piece, Michelle. I wish the world was a better place and that everyone could live in freedom and that there was equality for everyone, but we are a very long way from that and perhaps we have already seen the best of it. I rather imagine that our great-grandchildren will be living in some kind of slavery if they exist at all.
Take care,
Sherry
