I'm sure we've all been here at one point in life.

Poem Artwork

Woes of the Heart

What has life now laid with destruction
upon the ground so near my feet
is it retaliation for juvenile behavior
payment for a due unknown
a punishment for crimes unobserved
rules and directions not followed
failure for denying truth
whispering second hand whispers
making comedy out of another’s plight
borrowing from trees of others labor
I cannot understand the reason why

Placed before me is such misery
dissolving into depths unknown
vanishing before both heart and soul
eyes scream what ones mouth can’t trumpet
tears flow from the depth of vision
heart pounds from this sudden loss
stomach hollowed beyond reason
sadness invades the soul
gaze peers towards clouded skies
searching for an obvious answer
none of ease are forthcoming

Body and ground fuse as one
no will to longer stand
drops of sadness meet with stone
stolen by the heat of the day
sobs burst forth from confinement
unknown shadow appears so near
questioning my condition
claiming I look worried to the bone
I turn to the face and say “hey mister”
“have you a dollar for another ice cream cone”

Sending in the clowns...and the fat lady to sing...
for woes to be gone...feeling the sadness, with a
freezer full of ice cream! Please come by....

A familiar list of woes at any age. Believe me, I can sure relate!
An elegant twist at the end...
I have seen the crest-fallen face of a child when he discovered that he didn't have enough money for an ice cream cone and the generosity of the ice cream man as he gives it to him anyway.
Blessings,
Christine
