Here, By the mountain caves The cats are my friends My days' compatriots In a land of no name (In their distance As distinct From motion Giving me Pensively My one closeness Held in suspense Like my affection) Unseeing witnesses Unquestioned That carelessly Incorporate life Present Never In one place alone And never Quite Where you see them Alert Unfathomable Pliant Soft streams Screaming On the nights When in heat Given To cathood And living lives Of devotion To the unknown Spirit-like Haunted and serene Endless Stark Wild and shy In the darkness reduced To a pair of phosphorescent Eyes Living in mountain caves With me And resting On thornbushes' feet Beneath the sabras In rare places Of true solitude Life-dancing hermits Of the deep That burn Without fire Sharpened, like stone tools By instinct's intuition Unfailing All night-seeing eyes All claws and teeth Enduringly Awaiting their Strike Killing is At no moment Beyond them A cat's newborn With eyes unformed And witless But hiding Irony Stares into my eyes Dense With intensity And sees In them Shadows And signs Into which it reads Signs Trying On ocassion To indentify with me (So as to know) And trying With great care In catish childhood's Clumsy smooth fluffy smartness To estimate what it takes To be me As the sea before us Hums And I Wait Wait By the mountain caves

I would love to see those cat's. It was written with a very mild and peaceful feeling, yet I felt like I was there with the cat's myself.

Reminiscent of the vision quests undertaken by the shamen on the Native American side of my ancestry--the soul of a man alone with God's breath shaping reality, and creatures of the wild proposing omens of things already in the world and things yet to come. Illuminated lines from first to last.
