Why Do They Dance Around Me?

Do you ever feel like people are dancing around you like you are an idiot?

They dance around me with smiling faces
and dart an occasional wink.
Music must be playing, I don't hear a sound,
the words are incomprehensible I think.

Why do they dance around me so
not stopping to hear my thoughts?
I know they see what they want to see,
but my integrity they see not.

The fool I must appear to all
who join in on this maddening trot.
As long as I appear the shy buffoon,
I fear they will never stop.

I shall close my eyes and cover my ears
and maybe they will dance along.
I will not succumb to their cruel intent
nor dance to the phantom song.

Who are they you ask and I tell you now,
they are both friend and foe?
who perceive my calm serene demeanor
as dull, bland and slow.

If only they could take the time to see
the world through my eyes they would know?
the soothing melodies that fill the air with
meaningful words that flow.

I hear the orchestrated sounds of a rainy day
and fall leaves under my feet?
A mother humming to her unborn babe,
while children play hide and seek.

Hear the joy of unwrapping a much-awaited gift
or the sigh after a pleasurable meal?..
the sound of the virgins wedding dress floating
to her groom and the love that they feel.

Can you hear the music and feel the
unspoken words of joy?
Or am I in a world of futility,
as THEY dance around me insidiously
oblivious to my desire for tranquility.

Then, that is their loss!
Well done, Mary!
