An elderly lady longs to see her family at Christmas.

Forgotten

Sitting alone in the darkness,

wind and rain slapping at the window.

The smell of sugar cookies

filling the little room.

Twinkling lights from the Christmas tree,

adding a cheerful glow in the corner,

gaily wrapped gifts stacked around it.

Her grandbabies, she’d waited so long.

Her son promised this year they’d come.

She’d waited near the door,

with joyous expectation till after ten.

Now nearing midnight,

she realized they’d forgotten her again.

Tears falling down faded and withered cheeks,

so badly she had wanted to see the little ones

just once more.

So tired, so alone,

she passes gently out of this world.

The phone rings.

Her son calling,

the excuses ready on his tongue.

No answer, he wonders

where she could be?

Another powerful message so beautifully offered for our understanding.

Your words are magical, Elizabeth.

A very powerful write, Elizabeth! Poignant, sorrowful, yearning and conceding... I would wish this would not be me, in my future...

Shoot, when you see how expensive it is for a family to travel these days, the old broad should have gotten on a plane or bus and met them half-way and taken her cookies with her.

On the serious side, your work is a good reminder to stay in touch and make that effort.

Good work.

Elizabeth

Thorns such as these are carried in many hearts. Carelessness is the cause of more deaths than intentional murder. A well achieved poem.
