My boon companion basks on cushions, bench,
surveys the scene from seventh heaven's heights
and deigns to dream as atmospherics drench
his creature craves and earthy appetites.
As birds are winging round about his sights,
but out of reach of either man or beasts,
his dinner’s served at six, while some hawks’ flights
clutch creatures in their claws for evening’s feasts.
There's one! The tail and tiny feet append
and air beneath—enough to make me cry--
but my feline’s both predator and friend
so knows the need to eat shows some must die.
There’s balance there, like on my balcony --
Best harness puss, in case, for company.
When we lived in Northern Wisconsin, I used to keep our cats inside for fear of the eagles overhead. Now, we live in Southern California and I keep them inside for fear of cars! Your imagery was vivid and catching;) And your photo reminds me of my dear kitten, Simone. I have a poem and photo posted for her called "Kitten."
Thank you for sharing your poem,
Blessings,
Sharon
A truly interesting perception from a pet owner's viewpoint.
You have come up with a new look at an eternal struggle, with which many can't come to terms. Yes, to survive, it is often at the expense of other living creatures. Such is the world in which we are glad to live. Thanks for this. - Bill
