A MATTER OF TIME

Amid the grumbling murmur of one’s so serious

unexpectedly displaced by the sudden and unforseen storm

I scrambled to appease recognizing full well that eventually,

the sun would shine…

A matter of time.

As impatience magnified, in this inconvenient delay

of summer thunder and  driving rain,

I encountered the sad nature of man

who, in his eternal haste and seeming negativity

had forgotten the luxury of unexpected time.

Forever on the clock, over-scheduled, rat raced

his interaction now with fellow man was

reduced to competition, occluded by the hovering clouds

as time itself had become the great unknown

in this fast paced world of instant gratification.

And as it is my nature to pacify impatient man,

in attempt to stay one step ahead of the tic...tock...

I took a moment to look outside, assess and estimate the

delay,
engage the back-up plan… while tuning out the grumble

in hopes that some would welcome the serenity of the rain.

My eyes were treated to an unexpected sight…

no, not a hint of sun or wash of blue amid the grey,

but a child, all of two, who earlier had cried...

afraid to leave his father’s side or come inside

as thunder rolled, and grumbles grew….

“My Daddy… My Daddy!”

His whine and fears now set aside

found himself happily at home in the deluge...

his game was not delayed…merely enhanced.

He ran, rain-soaked with laughter,

head-long through the downpour, stopping on occasion

To feel the rain drops quench his smiling thirst

Splashing through the walkway’s stream

kicking sandaled arcs to lead the way

even the bedraggled daylilies smiled as he

pounced two-footed into the deepest puddles

collapsing into the murky brew,

leaving mud angels behind.

And Daddy, a safe, dry distance away

quietly encouraged his son to continue play

the rain his new found friend

And without knowing, he caused a hush

as the impatient ones one-footed, dry indoors

took note of him and not their watches for a change

now captivated by the innocence of one so small

and his unaffected ability,

to make sunshine out of rain…

And for a second...

Time stood still.

I remember those days of riding my bicycle in the rain just for the pure joy of it.

Nowadays, when people are huddled under the supermarket roof waiting for a small break in a shower so they can dash to their cars, I just stroll on out, saying, "Hey, It's only water, not Hydrochloric Acid."....LOL

Taylor,

What a special time-piece you have given us! One which is good for all time, and for all generations.

Perhaps, it is why the LORD says we must become LIKE CHILDREN, to enter into His kingdom...innocence and purity and thankful hearts...all returned to us, through Him!

This is a superb offering, Taylor, and it has blessed me. Thank you.

Dear Taylor,

I love the quote and feel that your poem is a wonderful compliment to it. We have so much to learn about this life and, when we follow the simplest of things (like children), we discover the paths that fill our journey with joy.

Superb. The same reason I threw my watch out of a window many years ago... Does our time rule us, or do we rule our time?

You crystallise the world through the eyes of an incredulous child, where everything is an adventure, and the the authoritatice stamp of adulthood, has not impinged upon the mind and imagination of the youngster.

We would all do well to retrace our lost steps back to childhood, and find once more, that which was lost..

You plumb the depths of your philosophical and spiritual soul to produce this gem of ingenuity and perception.

Life can be so simple when captured through the eyes of a child..how sad that we lose that innocence as we age and wear the scars of time. I found this exceedingly reflective ...like those who watched the child, ...being swept back to moments in childhood when all the world 'glistened'..stunning write my friend. Love Panda :)

The innocence of Kids, through every trial, they make light of it. You only have had to see children after flooding in parts of the world, out in boats or playing, when the storm has passed.
God bless the little one's, and example to us.
Very indepth insight dear Taylor, Ty for reminding me.

I have to agree with Richard. This is, clearly, a deep philosophical write. This must be read more than once to full acquire the messages within the messages - and still there is depth to be discovered beyond that. Your mind thoroughly intrigues me. -- Jeff

Why do such things become an annoyance as we grow on in wisdom and age. Ofttimes we encourage those around us to pursue and enjoy that which we ourselves are hesitant to embrace.

Vicariously living the moment through another in anticipation of feeling something lost along the way.

This is your deepest philosophical write dear Taylor. A gem to be savored. I believe that it is is those moments of cogency, as this is, when our minds eye opens to something deeper, that we spur the heart and mind to rid ourself of the lethargies that too often incarcerate our souls.

In fraternity and vision ...

I heard this quote long ago so I will have to paraphrase a bit... In their innocence, there is wisdom. In their wisdom, there is innocence. Your poem exemplifies this so well! Well written Taylor!

A lot of philosophy involved within the confines of this very well-written poem. Also, just some good old-fashioned common sense, that we seem to have misplaced for the most part these days.

BEAUTIFUL... and you'll NEVER guess... I am just listening to Prince's Purple Rain... "only want to see you laughin in the Purple Rain"...!!!! Soooooooo appropriate. A moment of preciousness like this expands and endures a lifetime when it sows goodness into our soul. Lovely thoughts expressed here, Taylor. A gift like that of childhood... may we never lose it! "to make sunshine out of rain…" This is the beauty of your excellent poem Taylor. The golden nugget, the kernel the wisdom, of seeing that time and circumstance is what we make it. Little children can show us the way;-) Thanks for sharing this gem!...
